Actually a lot of NPC are calling you only by your first name, at least in the storyline quests. The only real downside of the surnames is that the coding used when an NPC interacts with you has the NPC recite your complete name every time. At least based off what I've seen so far. Would probably be better if NPCs were programmed to use only your first name. Either is still echelons above the NPC just saying "adventurer" when referring to you.
I guess it depends on how you're related to the NPC, wich is quite good.

People can be pretty creative with names. The trouble is when there are thousands of other people out there, one or two are bound to be just as creative, and lo and behold, all those creative names are still taken.
And then there are those who don't want to be creative, they just want the name they want.
With surnames, you can get real creative, you can be generic, or you can just get something at least close to the name you wanted.
Without....
If 100 people want the name Cloud, it doesn't matter to me. I honestly don't understand why it bothers anyone else."That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."
"That name is taken. Please choose another."

Surnames are awesome! Leave them alone!
Sending people a tell shouldnt be made a chore ether.
Ahhh another troll post by Belgian...
/sigh
Thats because of the lack of a /sea function and not surnames. In XI there were plenty of people I couldn't spell their name but having /sea helped a lot to send a tell. People should fight to have a /sea function and not complain about a surname. SE is not going to get rid of it because a few people on the english forums don't like it.
edit: If Tanaka(or now Yoshi) added a /sea then the only people complaining would be Belgian and others that can't think for a few seconds to come up with a proper surname they like.

If that the case then that improves the /tell people then just make it optional for people who do not want a surname should not be mandatory regardless. If i do not want a surname i should not be required to have while if i want im more then welcome to have 1.Thats because of the lack of a /sea function and not surnames. Sadly things don't always work like that. I don't want AA and would rather it be optional but I doubt they add my special snowflake feature. Some things you just have to deal with it or move on to the next.

Ah right!
Pro-tip
To send a tell to a player who's in front of you, target the player and type
/tell <t> [message]
To send a tell to a player who did a /tell to you (For example, "Dramaturgicus Extraordinaris"), type
/tell drama
Then type the TAB key to start the Auto-translation, and select his name. You'll have this result:
/tell Dramaturgicus Extraordinaris
To start a tell to a player who has been already /tell'd, just press CTRL+T.
If you've /tell'd more than 1 player, you can keep pressing CTRL+T to scroll the players you've /tell'd.
Hope this can help!
