Thats because of the lack of a /sea function and not surnames. In XI there were plenty of people I couldn't spell their name but having /sea helped a lot to send a tell. People should fight to have a /sea function and not complain about a surname. SE is not going to get rid of it because a few people on the english forums don't like it.
edit: If Tanaka(or now Yoshi) added a /sea then the only people complaining would be Belgian and others that can't think for a few seconds to come up with a proper surname they like.

If that the case then that improves the /tell people then just make it optional for people who do not want a surname should not be mandatory regardless. If i do not want a surname i should not be required to have while if i want im more then welcome to have 1.Thats because of the lack of a /sea function and not surnames. Sadly things don't always work like that. I don't want AA and would rather it be optional but I doubt they add my special snowflake feature. Some things you just have to deal with it or move on to the next.
