Servers.. shut down for some un-forseen circumstance.. don't equal a memorial - and this is all they're financial statements will state.
Having a memorial to a week of "down-time" is a total waste of time, like the OP hinted at.

There's what happened at Silvertear, and there's always what will happen in the near future with Black Shroud. Yoshi-P is planning on razing it all down and rebuilding it. :PAs much as this would seem a good idea, I would still have to say no. A lot of people play games such as these to escape and forgot about such events. That would serve as a reminder in a place that most don't want to be reminded. Also, Eorzea does not parallel our real world and since no such event occurred in-game, it would still be very odd.
This easily resolves the lore issues.
Dungeons & Dragons Online has a memorial to Gary Gygax (sp?), the creator of D&D, added shortly after his death. There's a big shrine to him in a graveyard in the game (The graveyard is home to a series of dungeon adventures which he did the Dungeon Master voiceovers for prior to his death). As much as this would seem a good idea, I would still have to say no. I'm not saying that something like that is automatically appropriate here, the Gygax memorial is a nod to the man who made the game possible. The earthquake doesn't really hold major significance to the game itself.
A Statue of Titan Gripping Leviathan about the neck and striking him?
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
I believe it was a memorial to "have a place for players to gather and honor our fallen friends and the heros whom continue to fight for restoration," actually. You know.. actual people. It has nothing to do with servers.

I'd really like the stone monolith honoring all the people who lost their lives. The fallen warriors, who were our brothers in this game. It would really be a nice gesture.i personally would like something put in game. And can just be a stone monolith just saying in memory of those we lost. Some of us lost friends that day and we can't go to japan to pay our respect. Or set up a shrine/ temple. What they can do is set up a shrine/temple honoring titan and leviathen (sp) with a monolith there. have the levi shrine near LL and the titan shrine near Ul'dah. I don't see why it is a bad idea. alot of players in WoW had a funeral for a popular player who died. (and someone crashed it) And by alot i mean huge line of players. My brothers co-worker told him about it and he told me.
Like it was said, maybe in a remote location, and somewhat vague poetic words![]()

Personally I feel it wouldn't help people who play the game to get away from reality have a memorial staring them in the face about what happened.
It could be hidden. Like around Mor Dhona or something. Inside one of the many useless caves. People who would like to pay it a visit, could go and see the monument. That way no one would HAVE to see it, but anyone COULD.
That still defeats the purpose, why don't you just carv a memorial on a sticky note and jam it on your monitor if you want to always remember and respect. I don't need a monument to remember what happened, and then there is the issue of it being insensitive to other disasters?
Should we have a holocaust memorial ingame? A Hiroshima bombing memorial?
It's a matter of video games not being the place for this kind of stuff.
As I stated before, I totally agree with this. Inside the game is not the place for these things. That still defeats the purpose, why don't you just carv a memorial on a sticky note and jam it on your monitor if you want to always remember and respect.
