As an example, in Rift, upon the start of a major World Event, a notification appears in your quest log on the right of your screen, and you're free to remove and stop tracking it. This notification points you in the right direction to get it started; additionally, you get a message in your mailbox from a lore-important NPC who gives you some of the background (that is, it shows all of the same info the Lodestone does, but in-game, and partly via actual communication with notable figures!). It does a bit for immersion too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Any lesser events (bonus or free weekends, temporary dungeon reward increases, etcetera) have a pop-up window upon the first login on a character during that event, and meanwhile any upcoming developer events (Livestreams, GM and dev Q&As, PTS events) pop up in your chat log a few minutes before they begin.

Not an attack by any means, simply would be a nice thing for SE to look into in the future. Whether or not it's reasonable OP didn't catch this event till the end, I'm sure we can all admit there are always ways for things to evolve or be done better!
but there is an in game notification every time you log in.
