Now that I think of it, it would be an insult to Tanaka to just throw him under the producer of a game he led just last year. SE respects him more than that it would seem. Not that it's out of the question (Nintendo did it to Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi), but I don't see SE doing it to Tanaka. Anyway, just a thought to further deflect my own OP.

Sakaguchi and Kato seem to be the most compelling speculative candidates I've seen pop up so far.

I'm going to throw out a name just for fun, not because I really believe he is the mystery man. How about Yasumi Matsuno? How can you go wrong with the guy responsible for the scenarios of Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. I even loved the story in FFXII. His stories are probably a little too political in nature for FFXIV and I know he's now at Level-5, but I can dream I suppose.

Tanaka was who I thought of also. I mean, if you think about it, he's the only one they'd bother to keep secret, right? Plus he PROBABLY did MOST of the 7th Umbral Era stuff, and people are loving that. So it would make sense that they'd want him on staff for more scenario stuff.

Though I would not at all be opposed to Masato Kato.
