you'll have to pry my Dated Tarred Walking Hat off my cold dead head
I say just get rid of them (with an announcement beforehand of course, so people can NPC/spiritbond/etc what they need to).
I agree that it's confusing keeping them, especially because their stats aren't balanced at all with the direction the team wants to take equipment. By now, most people are probably using regular gear anyway.
You'll be frozen beyond time, unable to move. I doubt you'll be able to fight back for anything they decide to do.
Wait... that just went south.
You know what? Be thankful if taking their hat is all they do... *shiver*
I think all useless materials should go, and dated things should be unable to be made...BUT, that all currently existing dated items should remain in the game. Some of my favorite gear is 'dated', and a lot of my low level gear is dated. I paid plenty of gil for a lot of my dated items, and I've got a bunch of dated stuff that I sell to people looking to make it into materia.
With dated items no longer craftable, and being materia convertible, dated items will slowly phase themselves out of the game without them needed to be removed from the start of 2.0.
Why does everyone thing new players will be so confused? One, people aren't THAT stupid... Its something they can learn in like 2 seconds. Besides that, they could just as easily add an annotation to the description of all dated gear, with a brief explanation of what 'dated' means. And the dated gear will slowly phase out by people's natural tendency to convert and NPC them.I don't know what kind of database transfer they'll do with the new server, but I feel all the Dated recipes shouldn't be carried over. The easiest way would be to handle dated items like the Guild Marks; they disappear in ARR. That gives people time to try to sell them on the MW or vendor them before the servers go down. Keeping the Dated items in ARR will just serve to confuse new players.
That way they don't need to piss any of the current players off.
If you DO get rid of dated gear, I think anyone still in possession of anything 'dated' during the transfer should have their dated stuff converted into current stuff. I don't want to have to go rebuy my coatees (THE BLACK ONE, OF WHICH IS NOW UNAVAILABLE NON-DATED, AARGH!!) and my best gathering gear, etc. I should either get to keep them or have them automatically replaced with current stuff.
I have a few dated items that have some extreme sentimental value attached ... I'd prefer to not lose them.
The red magnifiers I made with the gold dust from killing LV99 goblins with old friends is one of my favorite piece of equipment, period.

Why? As much as I love my Dated Leather Espadrilles, these items are a waste of space and they said long ago that they would be removing them. It should be everybodies expectation at this point for such a thing to take place.
If anything, there should maybe be a few weeks given where we can go trade in dated gear to an NPC for something or other, so those with a lot of stuff can feel like it wasn't just lost or sold to an NPC for pennies.
I hope they keep the dated items, I like my dated bronze goggles (black)!

I say:
- trash the dated gear;
- replace them with better "optimal level" gear (not required level).
LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.
