People need to understand that the devolopers (Or at least community reps) are well aware of this thread and will respond to it when they have a answer.
It's no wonder they rarely respond to popular threads until they have something concrete to pass on, because if they are at all vague or don't actually have news people go ape on them telling them they shouldn't have bothered to reply if they didn't have a good enough answer.
Trust me they will get to this topic when the developers have decided what's going on with a vanity system IF they decide to add one. Keep supporting the thread and discussion flowing for your best chance to get a rep responce.
"No rep responce yet!?" Isn't going to get you a responce any faster.

So, for all the other threads Reps have responded to in saying "We have sent this idea to the Developers.", this one doesn't cut it? We at least want acknowledgement, people who can't accept that can simply deal with it. We just want to know that this idea has been passed along. While it probably is, some form of hope written in this thread is always nice. It is sad to see great ideas on these forums not even get acknowledged.People need to understand that the devolopers (Or at least community reps) are well aware of this thread and will respond to it when they have a answer.

As for the GC underwear thing, it disappoints me that Reps will take time to respond to this, but not something like this. We don't seek an answer from them, we do however like seeing solid ideas that are highly popular and been kept going since April with over 230 likes get acknowledged.
I love this idea. would be nice to be able to wear the gear i find the most visually pleasing rather then wearing 4 pieces of gear that couldn't be farther from matching. i think it would also dial down the whole cookie cutter looks in XIV, Granted i love the DRG AF gear but i find it hilarious when a group of them get together and they all look exactly the same.

It could be that the op's idea isn't compatible with the Devs' vision for the game
Which is something that I would completely understand.

I sometimes wonder why they bother to respond at all when people act like this.
*edit*
It's not like they have a set scheduel to respond to threads that garner X ammount of likes. We have seen threads hit well into 500+ likes before even spotting a rep appear inside and threads with 12 likes get a response.
When the reps are reading and have something usefull to say I'm sure they will respond.
You should be well aware a rep response can turn sour on them extremly quick in "Popular" threads when they say something like.
"....Yeah dev team is looking into it"
and you don't ever hear anything back from them about it ever again. I think they are trying to avoid saying stuff like that in popular threads.

Its always a possibility. I know they are not allowed to say "we", "will", "look", "into", or "this" in the same sentence. While no set obligation from their end at all to do this, it is always good that if something gets popular and the likes are raised high, then there should be some acknowledgement at least. Just my take on it.I sometimes wonder why they bother to respond at all when people act like this.

I like the idea. It shouldn't be to terribly difficult to integrate some sort of system like this. A lot of games have found ways to implement similar ideas from gear color matching to pulling stats off better gear and slapping it on lower level patterns.
The most likely way for SE to execute this based on what i've read (and not having peaked at their coding) would be to tie it to the new doll suit (forget SE's name for it) that they already have in play. Since each additional one of these gear dolls has to be be won/bought anyway it should be simple to add an extra "costume" doll for each class that is unlockable. Then it would work very similar to what the OP described. The Top doll would have your stat gear, the second or under doll would have the "Costume" gear and determine how you look.
I doubt this would be something able to be added by launch unless the code already exists but is dummied out. But unless there is a major design conflict I could see them adding this in the not to distant (post 2.0) future.
Just my two cents on implementation.
