People are missing the point of this thread. the impact ffvii generated in 1998 with PS1 have not been seen since then.

The topic of this thread is can XIV make such an impact? What can they do to turn people heads and attract their attention in a positive light? I know that is steep hill to climb, but I'll like to see it happen either by strong ad campaign or partnering up with Sony to make some bundle deal. Can they even make mini Eorzea in PlayStation Home? lol

^ pretty much this. from ff6 down is one generation while ff7 up is another generation but whats funny is you hardly see the NES/SNES generation belittling their games while you see people from the ps1/ps2/ps3/360 generation belittle games in their own generation. But on topic, like what others have already said I think when Wada says a game on par with ff7 I don't think he means ff7 2.0 I think he means they need to bring something new and innovating to the table as a message to other game developers that "We still got it".

Wada is making a very wise decision here.

In a sense, he is saying that if SE remakes FFVII, then they have effectively taking the easy way out. He feels that they need to move forward to show their fans that the franchise is still good.

I am curious about when he says "[...]once we've made a Final Fantasy game that exceeds the quality of FFVII.". I wonder what 'quality' he is referring to.

The problem with FFVII's success is that it was heavily inflated by factors outside of the game itself. Not only was it the first RPG to really break out of the 2D overhead graphics and instead deliver an epic cinema-style experience -- but it was one of first GAMES to do it.

This attracted people from well outside the RPG crowd who didn't have a problem with the turn-based RPG style battle system because the grandiose trimmings (graphical experience) The game became popular largely due to it's hype and novelty.

This is not to diminish the successes of the game itself, because it did have an interesting story (although a bit convoluted at times). and the characters where compelling and memorable...

But by any measure, FFVI has a better and much more epic story, captivating characters, and engaging world. If FFVI had the benefit of being the first "next gen" PS1 RPG, players would think of FFVII in the same way they do FFVIII.

Long story short: Wada is right, but FFVII was a really a case of the stars aligning perfectly. I don't think he should expect future FF games to meet it's standard in hype/nostalgia. Rather, he should consider the successes of all great FF games, From FFVII's hype, to FFVI's masterful story-telling, From FFXII's stunning art design, to FFXI's incredible revenue generation.

this is pretty much how it starts

someone mentions FF7 (really it can be any of them)

some jackass says "WUT no that one sux. This one is much bettar"
someone else "no, here's why that one is TRASH"
"No, mine is the BEST. YOURS is poop."

continue until every FF game now sucks and has nothing good about it. anything you think was good is just your imagination

    ff fanbase is pure turd.

The thing about VII (apart from the fact that it had a technically-imposed level of abstraction which allowed players to fill in the blanks and thus made it more personally meaningful), is that it was a flawed gem. Later titles have been way more polished, which makes it justifiable to say they're 'better', but they're only better in one way. They have less character than VII, so they're not better in that way.

This is the thing about personal taste. It's not that different people like different things for no reason; it's that different people think different things are more or less important, and like the things that do the things they think are important well (I think that's a proper sentence). Some people (a lot of people) think that VII's uniqueness and character are more important than the polished production values of the later titles. And then some people think the high production values are more important, and there's nothing wrong with that, either.

I think XIV as it stands definitely has (much) less polish and more character, but we'll see what 2.0 does to that. The thing about MMOs is that you can release a flawed game with a lot of character and then polish it - just look at Anarchy Online.

That's not to mention that VII was the first Final Fantasy game to be released in Europe. People forget that: you'd think I, IV or VI would have been, but no, Europeans had to wait for the Playstation rereleases (and, with the exception of FFI, still had to wait a good deal longer than North America for those rereleases). So yeah, FFVII was already going to be more popular just by exposing itself to that new market that the previous games didn't have.

FF7 was ok to me. Then fans of Cloud and Sephiroth left a bitter taste in my mouth.

It's like WoW. People don't hate the game. They hate the fans of the game that act in an unfavorable manner.

2.0 is AOK in my book. Yes, I borrowed Matoya's crystal ball.

You know, every time someone signs up for a forum (or at least one unrelated to Final Fantasy) with a username like Sephiroth771, I immediately prejudge them as being 13 years old. I know I shouldn't, but it's hard to stop. We are, in our brains, unfortunately hard-wired to initially stereotype people. But then I remember that if they were 13, that would make them younger than FFVII itself. Then I feel old and go and yell at people to get off my lawn. Which doesn't go down too well, given that it's a communal lawn.

Yeah, I blame Sephiroth for the fact that my neighbours think I'm crazy.

Unless they start making open world non linear final fantasy's then nothing will ever top the old school final fantasy's. It's that simple. OPEN WORLD NON LINEAR!
