If there wasnt a top 3, that has a reward of better drop rates, there would be no incentive for any individual to supply the hamlet with millions of points. Hamlets wouldnt reach lvl 2. The entire point of the top3 & top 20 is to create this incentive. It's not about e-peen.

Some people are happy to grind out their 60k chests without a top 20.
Other groups try and get 1 top 20 on the list to make the runs go quicker.
Other people are willing to dump huge amounts of gil and resources into getting into the top 3 and getting their seals done with.

Time = money. The system is working great.

I guess it depends on what you mean by credit. The fact that the top 20 bonus applies to the whole groups score I'd say your conclusion is wrong. Also none of the top20 drops are U/U so it's a safe bet that LSs are sharing the drops as well.

I also have to /laugh at the OPs original idea of making the turn in items U/U. 28% of players have a DoL over 40 and only 20% have a DoH. Making the items U/U means you just made it so that at best 30% of the playerbase can participate.

you need to make friends in-game to get your relic weapon. You'll never be able to do it solo. If you haven't made enough friends in-game, then honestly, you're doing it wrong.

Thats insane. Hyperion its still 2mil+ rest of top20 is ~50k though.

1st and 2nd were well over a million, but 3rd place people seem to always squeeze in

All you need is a good group of 8 people who are after the same thing as you. Whether you get this from staticing,you ls, or just get lucky and join a PUG then you end up sticking it out with, this content requires 8 ppl. Also, you don't NEED a top 20 provisioner to get 60K+, it just makes it easier. But once you find 8 people who have the same goal as you (in this case, relic), you can all work together to craft/gather and provision so that you always have someone on the list.

The whole group doesn't appear in the ranking. Only the person who turned the stuff in. You might say it doesn't matter because they all benefit in the end, but the point is that assuming only one individual from any group turns stuff in, that means there's a maximum of 20 groups / linkshells that can get optimal drop rates. Everyone that wants to pick up and play hamlet defense is SOL.
The whole point of my posting is that the ranking system DOESN'T NEED TO EXIST. It doesn't help anything. You can argue it doesn't really hurt anything in the end and I'd see where you're coming from (but still disagree), but you could just remove the whole ranking system and Hamlet Defense would keep on ticking all the same. It's just a wasted system that at best gives some people a chance to stroke their epeens and at worst may hinder some groups.

You dont need someone on the list to get optimal drop rate. Anyone can get 60k chest.
