no, i think i know where the assumption it would happen is coming from, and im pretty sure its a very wrong asumption

if you looked at the timeline, you would see "2.0 distribution" goes on for a month, but i think the person read into it wrong what that means

i got a feeling what we are looking at is the ability to download the client early, but it wouldnt be live for a month or so after that, meaning wed have the 2.0 client, but it wouldnt work til it was "live"

chances are the downtime will only be a few days tops, if even that depending on how they have to do things, but a month would be a bit excessive to assume.

So Yoshda talked to press today that there will be a 2.0 Alpha in late September. After they do adjustments more people will be let in and it will go into beta later, hopes the game to be out in the Winter.

So it looks more like they are doing 2 versions of the game 1.23 and 2.0 both at once with temp characters or copies on 2.0 alpha and beta.

Here is this quote from the IGN article:
    IGN FFXIV Article

So what’s the timeline on all this? First, in August, Square Enix will ramp up more detailed reveals about what’s to come in Final Fantasy XIV. Then in September, there’ll be an alpha test, and after feedback is collected and incorporated into the game, a beta test version will roll out first for PC, then for PlayStation 3. “We want to make sure this time we take a lot of time to listen to feedback from users during this beta test and implement as much of it as possible before the release,” said Yoshida. “We want to make sure we have a massive amount of content at launch. We don’t want to go into launch without enough to do. So it’s going to be building up that content base and getting this feedback in. That might end up pushing the release back a little. It’s all going to depend on that.”
I am glad to see that they are taking their time with this.

From the various interviews Yoshi P made it clear that transferring across player data from version 1 to 2.0 could take up to a month. It would appear that the beta will be with new characters as 1 month of work to copy data over for beta for a month of testing is very unrealistic not to mention players not being able to play at all while they copy the data over.
Also, keep in mind that transferring the characters to the new servers and systems could take up to a month. So that process will be running while the beta test is in place. There can’t be a launch immediately after the current servers are shut down.
    (from Gamerescape interview)

The beta for PC (which will start before the PS3)
Then in September, there’ll be an alpha test, and after feedback is collected and incorporated into the game, a beta test version will roll out first for PC, then for PlayStation 3.
    (IGN interview)

GE: So the beta test and current game will not be operating simultaneously?

Yoshida: No. Because we need the time to convert the data from the current version to the new version, we can’t have people keep playing because they will keep updating their data. That doesn’t mean we are not going to work hard to make sure the servers aren’t down for a long time. We know that the community is there and want to maintain that community.
    (Gamerescape interview)

This means that the beta will be new characters and not our current version1. When version 2.0 goes live at release we will go back to our original characters.

As it was outlined in the Gamerescape interview, the game will go down, during this period, we'll be playing the beta, either on premades, totally new characters or instanced copies of our current characters.

While we're playing the beta, the normal game will be unavailable, at the end of the beta, the 2.0 servers will go up. While the beta was going on, they will have been transferring our characters from the original game and they'll be ready to play when 2.0 goes live.

Basically if you don't want to participate in the beta (which will be a beta in the true sense, nothing you do will carry over) you'll be taking a break for hopefully not much longer than a month. I just hope for the beta we get pre-mades or instanced copies of our characters, because it's going to be difficult to test end-game content otherwise.

The sad part is not everyone will be able to join the beta, so some people may be locked out for FF14 for a month or so while the beta takes place

Yoshi-P was pretty clear that there was going to be a priority to get current players into the beta. I'm sure a vast majority of active players will get into the beta pretty quickly, after all they will be the best testers for much of the content.

He might of given it a priority, but it isn't 100% is it? Some people will get left out and the QQ will begin

Depending on how they do invites, I'd be seriously surprised if active players weren't all in at the start, or after the first handful of waves. If the legacy campaign is any indication, they realize how important the legacy players are, and aren't going to make us sit on our hands for months.

Here's how its going to be done. While they are storing are 1.0 Model and data we will be testing out 2.0 Beta making sure there are no bugs left and stress testing it, Yes in Beta we will be restarting just to test every moot point of it, After Beta are beloved Level 1.0 Model will return to us and allow to change there looks once and etc. and then back to Endgame etc.
