Sony broke the news of XIV existing at their 09 show. But it was just a trailer. Basically it was their way to trump 360 announcing they were getting XIII.It wasn't during Sony's, SE had their own segment. It wasn't even the first XIV info, that was first released in '09 during Vanafest I believe, or was it TGS? I can't remember. They did mention some information during their pre-E3 conference but if my memory serves me, the real information came during interviews and CG displays after the doors opened. In fact I remember more information coming each day for the game over the length of the opened-doors time thanks to interviews.
I still maintain E3 doesn't begin until the doors open for the Expo. Today is pre-E3 conferences to get gamers pumped for the real deal.
As for when it "begins," I'd say today. A lot of news comes out of the big conferences.
Well, firstly that wasn't a pre-show conference. That conference was on the 2nd. Pre-show conferences were on the 1st. The actual E3 event of 2009 was from June 2nd - 4th. Perhaps that's why Sony had their conference that day?Come on man, lets not argue... I made a mistake tho, it was 2009 e3, and it was at Sony Conference.

And Sony Conference e3 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo39EG7sp7w
Conferences are still very important XD They show a lot.
Also read my post, I never said first, I said announced. We had known about it, but this was Sony's announcement at their conference! (Not to mention the first stating PS3 exclusive which was wrong lol)
Announced has a connotation of "first" behind it so it was only natural to assume that's what you meant. I did read what you wrote.
Also, they weren't wrong with PS3 being the only console to get XIV. PC isn't a console and that was clarified at an interview later that day I believe.
I'm not denying that these pre-E3 conferences are important and should get information shared, I'm also not denying that they are E3 related - my only point is that the Expo doesn't start until tomorrow. Just because something is related doesn't mean it's the real deal. Kingdom Hearts is related to Final Fantasy but it certainly isn't a Final Fantasy.
EDIT: However, I have to say these pre-E3 conferences don't always show a ton. They show primarily what is going to be on the floor during the event and fuel the interviewers' questions that they'll ask at the interviews in the days to come. It's all pre-gamming, hype, jazzing up for what's to come... but not the actual event ;P

Apparantly EA is gonna talk about swtor from what I've read. It's been amusing to read on the official forums of said game how such a high profile license could plummet so hard after only a few months of release. It's easy to see why things have fell apart since it seems to be taking the same route as Warhammer when it comes to balancing and pvp. Though the only reason I see people sticking with swtor longer is because of swtor, a game of the same type by any other name wouldn't have even had 1/8 the starting subscription based and it would most likely be under 30-50k by now if this wasn't a Star Wars game.

One thing I"m surprised with atm is the lack of any concrete info in which interviews will be taking place. I would have thought they would say something by now so people could plan their schedules accordingly if anything was going to be streamed about E3, but it almost feels as if information won't be known til after E3. Odds are sure he'll have interviews but given the situation it doesn't seem like we'll be able to hear anything about until either after E3 or from a community rep post about it.
I haven't really seen or heard any mention of any group going out of their way to have an interview with the 14 developers during E3 so I kinda wonder what they have planned. Maybe they'll say something later today, ideally it would be nice to have some idea of what they have planned during E3 before the end of the day.
E3 HYPE TRAIN rollin' into the station!
I wouldn't worry to much. From what I understand things on the E3 show floor are extremely frenetic (and smelly, believe me when I say the best seats in the house are at your computer screens. The showroom floor is a total non-stop sensory overload and there are precious few chairs). Since most of the big companies keep their announcements close to the heart until their various pre-shows many of the interviews don't get scheduled until after the reveals. This is, of course exactly why they do the pre-shows to begin with.
All of the developers there are there for their piece of the press pie and there is plenty of it to go around. You can bet that a company like Square Enix will get whatever interview it asks for.

Fusionx and I are heading out today on behalf of Gamerescape and will be covering as much as we can over next few days, starting with tomorrow morning's Nintendo press conference. We'll be blogging and tweeting, and maybe recording some podcasts while we're out there.

FYI, our press meetings and interviews with SE are all scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, although we will certainly check out their public booth tomorrow.

Who would have thought?
But on a more serious note, my expectations for FFXIV at this E3 are near-nil now that the whole trailer thing got bumped off the agenda (I still can't comprehend why). I'll be watching the press conferences for reasons other than FFXIV though.
That tablet is more than a controller lol..but that's for a different topic >.>
