Never said it wasn't successful. It just didn't reach to the point people expected it to, everyone thought this would be a WoW killer and it got no where near that. It reaches the amount of players it needs to keep the game running and making a profit, which does technically make it successful. Rift, SW:TOR, and Aion were all believed to be WoW killers, which in my opinion, there is no such thing as a WoW killer.

Very much agree, it does have its own niche fans however. It's kinda like LoL's situation and how people thinks dota2 will kill LoL's population which didn't happens, it has it's own fans and will still stands for a long time despite dota2's release.

"WoW Killer" is as overused as those stupid movie commercials that claim that every movie that came out is "The best movie this year" just a dumb gimmick to trick people into seeing/giving it a try since everyone loves to hate WoW. So if a game says it will kill WoW they are aiming to draw in the audience that despises WoW in hopes they can grab enough people to prove it's true. The only problem with that though is there are far more people who love WoW then despise it. The advertising team/propaganda is only catering to the loud mouths that let their opinion be known and companies look at those opinions and think, oh wow lots of people hate WoW, I bet if we said this mmo will pwn WoW they'll buy it. But it never seems to work lol.

WoW took a ripe market and ran with it. It's kinda that simple.

Networking was their advantage, they caught the growing internet audience right as it was growing into it's own and coined the term "Going Viral" in a very profitable way.

Essentially, Blizzard hit a Water Slide to success. Where as everyone now has to struggle to pull subscribers away from them, which is much, much harder than bringing in new players to the field. So in short, yes, there is no such thing as a WoW killer, except if for some reason Blizzard starts competing with themselves or ever shuts down WoW servers. (Not likely at all.)

FFXIV has a very hard struggle and their best shot is to find a stable audience by making an easily accessible, yet content-rich game. So that players are drawn in, hooked, and stick around because they can see their progress being made, rather than hoping for an RNG drop. Then, they also need a place to utilize that progress in a content event fun enough to repeat for more reason than simply looting - like a challenge mode.

I see the potential for these things to be met in what I've seen so far of 2.0 as far as the challenge map. Steady progression, however, is going slow. We're having to claw our way for it and it's slow in coming.

Reading these forums you'd have to consider a niche market as failing as well.

"XI/XIV are doomed to a niche market rather than becoming successful"...seen that said quite a lot.

It isn't the media saying that, it is the players claiming this. I think RIFT is the only case where they used media and advertisements that said they are the WoW killers. "We are not in Azeroth anymore."

They are kinda failing the niche audiences as well, got to be delusional to says otherwise. Hello Kitty online has more players than us. Most of us here are clinging to the hope of v2.0, really really small minority enjoys the game currently.

Which is funny, because side-by-side screenshots at launch showed just how much their UI was an absolute carbon copy of WoW.

Except for XI at it's prime, it didn't attract everyone but it had a strong player base for almost 7 years even with "the best MMO ever (WoW)" being released 2 years after it. I think it's mostly the PS3 that'll bring in more players if anything, since that's generally the FF Playerbase to begin with, even the 360 version of XI releasing almost 5 years after launch brought in a good sized playerbase.

Playing Rift you'd tell almost no difference beside Rift's world not looking like a unicorn puked rainbows all over it.
