2nd biggest means nothing and it's certainly not second anyway. WoW and SWTOR have more subscribers... But Rift is far from being dead. I logged on recently and I saw activity on my server, which was one of the least populated since day 1. (PvE / EU-EN / Roleplay server).

dead rift or not, the game is a carbon copy of wow, and after the first boom everyone seen it and left. An expansion isn't going to turn it in the definitive mmo. Se have better opponents to deal with it

Rift is not the 2nd biggest MMO, nor is WOW the biggest. At least not world wide. Ragnarok Online has 50M subs world wide.

That being said, FFXIV is a Final Fantasy based MMO... Unlike Rift, XIV is based on a famous RPG series which has fans all around the world. If XIV didn't fail so bad and was actually a very good game, it would probably be one of the best MMO in NA today.

I've played Rift, its Ok but doesn't really appeal to me. I just keep coming back to my lil lalafel, here in FFXIV. It really is an attracting MMO to me. Anyway, I am really excited for next week, with all the news we should be hearing about the last poll, and information being released at E3. From here on out, it is going to be an excited ride! My body is ready!!

I played the Beta and while the game was not bad at all, it felt exactly like a WOW clone and was telling myself, why would i play this when i can just play WOW?


But anyways i went back to XIV. Even tho' the game has some major issues, it's still somehow enjoyable when you play with pple. But to me i feel that XIV i still missing that Final Fantasy feel. I played all of them and XIV doesn't feel like it should fit in the series and i hope that 2.0 will change all that.

RIFT isn't as successful as people thought it would be because it copies WoW to the point that it is borderline copyright infringement. A Blizzard developer said himself that the only way to make something top WoW is a game that doesn't fall under a generic formula. People can say games like RIFT is a breath of fresh air from WoW, but almost always people fall right back to WoW when new content releases.

This is pretty much how the cycle works when a new MMO comes in:

Play WoW > Get bored of WoW > Hear of a new MMO > Believe it will be the WoW killer > Play it for less 1-2 months > New WoW content > Go back to WoW > Back to step 1.

In all fairness to FFXIV, it is it's own game and WoW doesn't really come to mind when I play it. The end result may have been disastrous, but SE does believe in making products that stand out. I do believe however FFXIV should learn from WoW on a few concepts that made it successful, but not copy it from the ground up. What I refer to is systems like Content Finder, Wardrobe System, Auction House structure, and so on. Basic MMO fundamentals.

Rift is a successful game, easily proven by the number of players they have and retained. It just not made for audience in this forum and it's definitely annoying when people shittalks something they never really got into, it's as bad as WoW players that talk shit about FFXI, you are no better.

^^This, even though I did not enjoy rift (it wasn't that bad just the same thing as most other MMOs) it is still successful. This thread has turned quite hypocritical.
