Or it might just be something as simple as what was referenced with Ifrit when he demanded you and your path companion bow to him alone. Odin might want the rest of the Primals out of the way.In FFXI, at least, there wasn't much /kind/ about what he did- he was a magnificent bastard who trolled the Terrestrial Avatars while being on their side, arguably did everything he did for his own survival first, for the lols second, and because a world without mortals would be boring third. His solution- admittedly, the only viable solution outside of constant divine intervention, and the only solution that -didn't- have the side effect of spinning off multiple universes full of misery and suffering- to the central problem of the plot was to cause a 'glorious' war that would never ever end.
That said, as I've mentioned previously, that doesn't really have any bearing on the plot of FFXIV obviously! (Also, Gaius is a -lot- more sinister in the Main Scenario quests; he's only better than Nael in that he wants there to be an Eorzea left to rule, whereas Nael wants to leave a big bite taken out of reality where Eorzea used to be. (Which: Why would Odin want to do that, I wonder? Maybe Nael's taking things too far, and that's why there's going to be a Seventh Umbral at all instead of Eorzea falling into the Void; maybe Odin will stop the machine once he's close enough to get out.)
