This is a bad idea for multiple reasons.

First, there's a definite convenience benefit for casual players being able to purchase ready-made gear off of the AH with materia already on it, without having to worry about meld failures or finding a crafter.

Second, as described, this would also serve as a way to unsocket materia (in a recoverable manner) from a piece of gear, which isn't supposed to be possible.

When the auction house arrives with 2.0 have items posted with Materia in them stripped of their materia and returned to the sellers inventory.

We already have an "auction house." There isn't one arriving in 2.0. There are overhauls and improvements coming, and many have already arrived.

Honestly, other than having to travel to a seperate area, what does the market do that an auction house doesn't?

We have searching, and index, both selling and buying both directly from the index and from the retainers if you so choose, and a price history. About the only thing missing is timed auctions (instead of buyouts), which isn't even really needed.

Anyway... I don't really see any "idea" in this thread. Something about player bazaars becoming useful? That's not an idea, it's an observation.
