I'm confused why folks are so flipped out about no trailer at E3. I think advertising for 2.0 too much before it's actually released would be a mistake, so this is actually a good thing. Besides, if you read the letter from the producer, he explains that when they start advertising 2.0, they want to do a huge media blitz with tons of information, etc. not just a trailer and call it good. Honestly, this is probably the smartest decision they could have ever made.

For a game that most consider highly forgettable, what are the chances of sustaining a hype train from people who don't even play the game right now? Chances are a lot of them would just roll up and check out the current FFXIV, get super confused and peace back out. Personally, I think the best plan would be to start their media blitz around a month before the 2.0 client is released, and try to hook as many people as possible to come check it out (or sooner, if there's a an open beta of the 2.0 client, or a good chance of getting into a closed beta).

I'm not normally one to defend SE, considering the issues the game currently has, but a lot of you folks are just out of hand. Even if you don't understand or agree with it, try to have faith that SE is trying to do their absolute best to make sure 2.0 is going to be a success, and they have to be really careful since they only do have one shot at it. I think they're making the right decision. Exposing 2.0 to folks in general (and believe me, your average video game player does NOT scour video game news sites or avidly look for E3 news - they just don't) too early could damage the game more than help it.

Besides, anyone on this forum shouldn't even care. 2.0 won't come out any sooner or later based on when a trailer gets released, and you're ALREADY PLAYING THE GAME. You are not who they have to get on the hook, so it doesn't really matter if you think it's a bad plan or not.

I was (mildly) surprised by the decision, but fully support it. Keep on trucking, SE.

You might think this looks bad, but look at recent patches. When patches were delayed and without bugs, giving us a lot of content at once, people were happy. When you give them a patch on time with bugs and little content and a 1.22a 1.22b 1.22c all with little content (just to keep the 1.22 on time) people freak out and ragequit and flame on the forums.

SE is aware of this, so they know they need to pull all the stops when the time is right, all at once. You should want this too if you want the game to be successful and attract other players for 2.0 and give this game an actual population.

You'll be eating your words when you see a Lalafell summon Odin out of his felt hat in the trailer!

Didn't read most of the thread, but...

I can understand no FFXIV trailer. If all they had was some pretty pre-rendered trailer you know everyone would still be skeptical and say things like "so what? all big releases have these trailers. how is the actual game?" especially for FFXIV, people need to see the actual game first. Also, the content of the trailer might better coincide with the launch of the beta or something.

But FFXIV better be there and there better be gameplay footage to show changes. To sit out on this looks weak, stupid, and they are going back on their plans which makes them look untrustworthy and flakey.

Best case scenario would have been a slew of gameplay footage followed by a trailer IMO. It doesn't make sense to me that they would say they want an explosion of info and then sit out e3, the only possible reason I can think of is that they want more attention all to theirself.

SE missed their biggest chance at saving XIV. Exactly when all of the gaming industry has their eyes set on E3 for the biggest news on the year... SE decided to skip by saying "the most effective way to introduce version 2.0 to the world would be with a flood of new material rather than just a trickle."

How giving to world less = a flood, is beyond me. I can bet anything that their trailer was pure old stuff mixed with 2.0 CGI and since they saw that almost everyone was expecting something big, they choked.

Anyone else disappointed by this? Most pple that were turned off by XIV because of it's poor launch, will not be looking up by themselves for 2.0 news, nor will they give a crap about a website. E3 and a new gameplay trailer would have been the best chance of showing these pple that XIV will change. Pple that never played, know by now the bad reputation the industry has given XIV and they missed their chance to bring in these pple too.

Good Job SE! They should get an award at E3 for management of the year.

EDIT: Seems like we are not the only one thinking this is a bad move.

Doing a quick google search with Final Fantsy XIV E3 for the past 24h and the news of the cancelled trailer is all over the web. Lots of sites have posted the big news and i can tell you that most comments are very harsh and the rest don't even give a damn at all about the game. SE missed out their chance on this one....

Also most gaming websites confirm that 2.0's presence at E3 will be only through interviews.
Can't you read? The trailer is ready. They just didn't want to show another cgi half ass trailer. They want to blow us off with the real ingame engine. I agree. Plus, this isn't news. Since I saw the e3 square enix lineup, clearly missing ffxiv and versus, I didn't keep hopes of them showing up, plus, who gives a rat ass about E3? They gotta focus all the nukes at TGS. Usually, E3 gets only the usual, the second and third Square enix division, which have the likes of hitman, tomb raider, deus ex. Etc. don't expect any news from the likes of final fantasy versus, kingdom hearts , ffxiv before TGS.

    - which would be the most intelligent scenario. Gamescon is another good place to present, and honestly E3 is more about the big consoles and electronic devices showing off what they got. People seem to forget this in wake of all the hype leading up to what is pretty much an inflated investor's show.

Personally, there are a lot of other things I want SE focusing on showing in E3 than simply FFXIV 2.0 right now. Versus XIII and whatever else they have coming down the pipeline should take precedence and FFXIV can wait until the company isn't both competing within itself and with every other major publisher and hardware developer out there - and this is assuming they would have a bucket load of detailed information, which they already admitted they don't have. (Probably under orders from higher up not to reveal any major spoilers for 2.0 until a closer date which I bet there would be some major ones as soon as you load into the map.)

But again, a UI, Map, and Engine overhaul is nice, but nothing to be so excited and upset over. I don't know where people are getting this idea that 2.0 is so much different from what we have, aside from our major standing complaints (Such as UI, Lag, and things like the Auction House) being resolved.

Most of the revamps the game was to go under that could be handled by the current engine is here. There's a few sections of new content coming in such as Legatus (which will be here before 2.0), PVP (bleh), Crystal Tower and a New Main Storyline to experience - but all of this could be rolled into the concept of a content patch, and not all of it is to be fully up and running by the time 2.0 is out.

I really think people need to calm down about this - lest they hype themselves into another major crash of self-inflicted disappointment.

Why are you assuming a trailer needs to be half ass CGI?

Why can't the trailer consist of actual gameplay footage, the new redesigned landscapes and the new graphics engine??

If SE didn't want to show us a crappy CGI trailer then how come that's what they made?

Probably because MMO's aren't really the most exciting genre of game to watch in video form. Nobody would have been hyped about FFXI if they just showed 6 people wailing on a crab with a menu open, or hyped about FFXIV if there was a sweet montage of people crafting or gathering.

I know it would excite everyone in here at least.

As a counter towards the opinion that websites are bashing SE left and right for this, Siliconera posted a pretty neutral stance on this whole matter. In fact, they didn't even talk about it as such as severe case - they focused more on WHAT the letter was actually about. And the comments aren't harsh at all.

    http://www.siliconera.com/2012/05/28...l-fantasy-xiv/

Meanwhile, the Kotaku comments....even viewers think that website post was uncharacteristally negative and disgustingly butthurt about the whole matter.

    http://pc.rpgsite.net/news/1701-fina...ler-to-skip-e3

RPGsite also expresses a similarly neutral approach to the whole matter. While yes, they expressed some form of discontent with the trailer not being at 2.0, they still provide a positive outlook on that SE is being transparent with their roadmaps and other PDFs.

    http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/2012/05...g-shown-at-e3/

Somewhat a bit more negative, but understandable in that they are confused with what is being shown or not. Nonetheless, they are still going to keep up with the information, and leaving this matter behind which many of you can't seem to.

So to OP: aside from Kotaku, I can't seem to find any other website outright bashing the move. Disappointed and confused? Yes. But they are nonetheless still supportive of this whole idea.

EDIT: I should add that the searching for such sites took less than ten minutes. It's funny how a little bit of research can be used to dispel a whole array of coments such as the 'massive negativity' which apparently the whole world wide web holds for this announcement...
