You also have to take into account the inevitable employee who trips over the power cord to the server...
servers all setup and have multiple nodes connected to them take along time to shutdown and reboot. were talking maybe 10mins for each then they have to let the server fully boot before it goes online.
Maybe in 2.0, but we're still running on the bad servers.
I think the only valid complaint about maintenance is that it is always in GMT prime time is so annoying. FFXI was always the same. Oh home from school/work/college ill enjoy the game for a couple of hours. No wait MAINT!
Spread the timescales around so each playing timzone gets hit equally.
It not as simpel as offer the download.
They patch the servers. WHich means aspects patched and changed have to be inputed into the databases runnign world mechanics, player, mechanics, economy mechinics. Watchign for errors at that point, a quick test of changes, distribution of patch, then reboot of servers. An hour isn't that much time in reality to the changes.
Typically databases are slow to insert, change lines, and run the rebuild process.
Other first-world problems:
We're also out of coffee.
Maybe due to testing to make sure everything still works after the patch. Maybe the deployment includes a bunch of other code that's seemingly unrelated. Or maybe they have to deploy the whole back end every time they make a change. There's really no telling without some inside knowledge of SE's deployment process. (And yes, I have knowledge of these things, I test software for a living and am often involved in the deployment process at work.)
all i did was ask a question. I would like to have a better understanding of what takes place on SE's end. The trolls are the people leaving the the stupid comments.
its my understanding that 1.0 is now running on the 2.0 servers.
