So.... why the Races from FFXI?

Same reason I didnt play WoW.
Orcs and Trolls are ugly and the concept of them being playable should burn.

They picked these races because they are some of the most, put my self in their shoes, type of races. There aren't really a lot of races in FF lore, sure they have Bangaa and Viera, even PuPu's, but not a lot to choose from. Plus the devs are generally shooting back to old FF games. Not only were the races in FFXI a natural choice, but they seemed to be the only choice as far as the amount and to avoid people being freaky reptiles and the dogish Nu Mou.

When I first saw XIV, I was really hoping for an MMO set in the FFTA, FFTA2, FF12, FFT universe. Y'know, these guys:

Viera


Seeq (hey, if people play Galka, they'll play these guys... ) lol i'm a terrible person.


Bangaa (hell yes I'd play a lizard man. Wouldn't you?)

I mean, the world was already there. 12 added the vast amounts of Lore. FFTA1 and 2 proved the versatility found in the races. From my point of view, all XIV had to do was build a game around all that, and I'd have been ecstatic.

Instead, my first reaction when I saw this:



was, "Holy crap, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY TARU"

Probably said already but didn't SE already state the reason for making races look so similar is so players who were from FFXI could carry on their existing characters into a new world? Thus the reason they offered allowing you to name yourself after your FFXI character and server. This was done on purpose. Some things changed, but pretty much to carry over the character you grew attached to during the lifetime of FFXI.
