    My first post, and felt compelled to reply because I do support the OP. Appearance slots are indeed becoming common in MMO. They had one in EQ2, and it worked exactly the way the OP described it.

    I agree with the limitation that only gears your class can wear should be allowed to be equipped in appearance slots.

    I also understand the concern of someone who said that during PvP, they wouldn't want to misjudge a person's appearance. Although I don't think this is a big issue, maybe during PvP, the appearance slots can be disabled and only the armor will be displayed.

    In any case, I don't really see any negative impacts. Those that don't want to alter their appearance don't have to use it, and those that do, they can use it. In PVE, you can easily just /check if you want to inspect how well-geared your teammates are.

    In SWTOR this is becoming a big issue because armors with great stats cause crazy mismatch. A Trooper character can look like a rainbow. They've implemented a system where the boots, helmet, and gloves will automatically match their colors to the chestpiece. But people are still begging for appearance slots to solve the problem permanently.

    Also in addition, I feel that by calling it vanity; vanity carries a negative connotation, which is why we're getting some responses saying "this is not a fashion show". Maybe call it alternate appearance slots, alternate skin, or etc. If we want support, we need some great Public Relation action, and names do make a difference. Recall : "Bailout" vs. "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act"

    I don't think this risk is as significant as some make it out to be. I've PvP'd with transmog gear on and doesn't change the dynamics between who can hit you from range and so on. Doesn't really affect PvP performance in any way, really.

    Well, they wouldn't need appearance slots if they had listened to the beta testers and expanded the mod system instead of mostly destroy it and roll back to an inferior version of what we had.

    As far as name, I would go for Transmogrification, but WoW already took that term. Hmm....

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
    Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

    I agree, it has worked fine in other games, I don't see why it wouldn't here. I mentioned it only because I feel that this is the only complain that the naysayers have. I myself don't foresee any other problems that can arise from this appearance slot/ transmogrification system. I would love to hear the position of the developers on this. Maybe they have some amazing explanation to disagree with us that we haven't thought about, we're all ears.

    In the future though, I think all MMOs should have this option. Almost every MMOs runs into the same exact problem of having everyone look the same, or having everyone go around with mismatch gears. Some people that don't care about appearances don't mind, but others care about roleplaying appearance very much.

    I personally want to see an MMO that takes the step Bioware never did with the mod system for TOR. A system where gear has slots where you can allocate things with stats to decide the level and stats of that piece of gear. Sure, the grind becomes less about gear and more about these components with stats, but people would still compete to gear with unique appearances, and people like me can build their personal set and save the world while wearing it. *nod*
