At the core of it all is the problem that stances which spread the legs very wide are unathletic, and therefore no blow which both seems believable and powerful can come from them.

Karate would have a word or two to say about that. But that got me curious, and it looks like dark knights are standing in something similar to shotokan's fudo dachi - Immovable Stance. I suspect it's a smidge exaggerated in-game, but it's a normal, very athletic stance that is both deep and very wide.

My only issue with it is it's really hard to judge the center of the character in it so I know how hard I can greed.
