All this gender and race locked stuff was unnecessary even back in 2014. Like, why is a Lalafell able to sit differently than an Au Ra? As if other races can't do that little wiggle sit. Or animations in general. Why do Au Ra have such a fun cheer emote and no one else? As if my Miqo'te couldn't just mimic that...

Because different races are supposed to look different and have different vibes (conveyed in large part by postures and animations). Otherwise what would be the point?

I see where you're coming from here, and FFXI even took this a step further by making the races have different combat animations as well, but I'd like to think the point would be the racial appearance and size, not just the emotes. The racial animations I prefer don't prevent me from playing Viera. Lack of hats didn't prevent me from playing Viera. Lack of my favorite voice options also don't prevent me from playing Viera. I like Viera for what Viera looks like (even though I much prefer the Feol version that don't exist in XIV) and being able to have better control over how I portray my character would make my day.

For FFXIV specifically, it's that they're shorter in height and would most likely have far more lively emotes. But beyond FFXIV, it's that they're the result of crossbreeding and the lore surrounding that.

Feol would have the same level of differences as we see between Midlander and Highlander characters to actually be lore accurate. Feol look like normal Viera on the surface, but next to a normal Viera, they are shrunken, pale skinned, and comparatively sickly looking. They only appear in a FFXII spin-off game.

You can tell the Veena are supposed to be a reference to Feol with the default in the character creator being that color scheme and min height, but I think the Feol Viera are more comparable in FFXII to say, suddenly finding a Miqo'te tribe that's revealed to be a weird offshoot of Hrothgar that started from a Hyuran patriarch in their lineage, or those mentioned Au Ra that are born with almost no scales from having a mixed race parents.

I really wanted Feol, too, when we were rallying for Viera as a new race. Veena just aren't that.
