But right now - and I feel silly for saying so, the thought of being marked/shamed by a frustrated player induces a sense of anxiety. Don't have friends who pvp in XIV either. Guess it just ain't for me. C'est la vie.
For those who have the backbone, be good to have a safe spot; would suggest some kind of mentor arena if the community were the sort to utilize the mode enough to justify time spent on it. Hall of the Novice, PvP edition?
that sucks as a novice I'd suggest frontline if you are just getting into pvp it gives you good exp and rewards toward series level.

BLM nukes your whole team, has more damage mitigation than a tank, is tankier than a tank and has more sustain than a bruiser.

WHM is a favourite child that gets extras, like an unnecessary ability you cannot remove with crowd control removal but wasn't considered a LB, like the same ability now having mana burn for no reason.
Whut? BLM and MNK like any dps (cept viper) can be easily burned down, the real stuffs that needs nerfs Dnc and Reaper LB it takes control away from people using shield for 5+ seconds which is just not fair especially if you used shield on it. While mnk also does this it does not hold you in place after the attack is done, blm LB's fast casts does not go through shield or take control away, Sam can also insta gib you through shield and Mch can kill you though walls needless to say it's useless pointing out BLM and MNK but if they nerf those it will just be another class being "broken" because most of them kinda are and they need to be so matches do not drag forever.

that said tanks need mitigation nerfs I hate seeing a pld just face tank a whole alliance because he's shielded up is very annoying viper does it too.

Getting focused on as a new player is super annoying, but I gotta say FFXIV has the least toxic pvp scene I've ever seen... Fairly easy to learn too. xd

Thank you for the suggestion. If I change my mind, someday you shall find me caught beneath the scrum of players on the frontline. (insert musical riff from Supernova).

The game doesn't do a good job of teaching PvP. I simply had to get dunked on in CC and "run around" in Frontlines, until I figured it out. I enjoy PvP somewhat, every now and then. Prefer frontlines. But the learning is non-existent.

CC is irreparably flawed. The little adjustments they've made here and there haven't worked, and the popularity of the mode is in free fall. They need to redesign the entire mode from the ground up to make any part of it workable.

The worst part of this is that PvP is globally balanced around this one game mode. Meanwhile, Frontline is blatantly more popular by leaps and bounds, even with all of its flaws. CC is supposed to be this game's premier PvP experience, with eSports and all, but the playerbase prefers the unbalanced Frontline experience. It's a pretty stunning failure, even compared to how poorly received other recent content has been.

Frontline is only "popular" because it's what the common, non-PvP'er queues into for their daily EXP and series pass progression. Let's not sit here and act like Frontline is dripping with that sweet competitive spirit.

I encourage you to keep going! I know how it feels, but it'll become fun especially as you put more thought into it and try out the classes you like. Some of the classes are really fun to play in PVP, compared to their PVE counterparts.

Frontline is more popular because it's a lot easier to queue in and just hide behind the 23 other players of the team. There is a lot less accountability, and it has that positive feedback loop where the more casuals try it, the more there is casuals in those games and the more they'll feel at home there.

In any game with a multiplayer competitive online component, the actual part of the playerbase that does play pvp is small. It's not just a XIV thing. And as soon as we speak about a ranked ladder, that part of the playerbase dramatically shrinks even more. A lot of people are just allergic to this. So if we're just speaking about ranked CC, and I don't disagree that SE could probably do a lot better to make the mode popular, then yes it's inbred (outside of JP). But casual CC? It pops all the time. I think that's honestly pretty successful, especially since casual CC doesn't even have a roulette.

I queued into a few casual CC matches the other day while testing a new mouse after not playing ANY PvP since they added the role skills to Frontline... the WHM bullying is so real. I had at least 1-2 enemies - sometimes more! - cosplaying as my shadow for the entire match, but it also made it extremely easy to lure them away from the chaos and basically loop them around obstacles while throwing in some support, setting my team up for a 4vs2 or 4vs3.

Not particularly riveting gameplay (I used to push the crystal a lot back in the day), but it may be worth mentioning to your friend that choosing their job based on their preferred playstyle may net them more fun matches overall.
Once I understood that my value lied in splitting up the enemy team as much as possible, making use of overly excited DPS and tanks chasing me around, I went up 5 series malmstones really quickly.

I agree it'd be better to have some sort of onboarding for newbies, because if that had been my first match ever I think I would have given up pretty fast lol
