Tried Dyeing a Chocobo.

The system is rather based on RNG due to how the fruits effect the RGB values thus causing it to end where it has to pick between ones very close to each other.

They really should just make feed items that guarantee the color that can be crafted with the rough amount of fruits (from the start point of desert yellow) it would take to win that RNG toss. So in this case a "Soot Black Chocobo Feed" would take 19 Xelphatol Apples, 23 Mamook Pears, and 32 O'ghomoro Berries to craft and guarantee you end up with a Soot Black Chocobo. If they do not have the man power to do this then simply lowering the wait time down from 6 hours would be welcome as well.

Again, Soot Black, the darkest possible color, has always been the hardest color to achieve. Since that's everything perfectly maxed out, and there is a lot of subtle RNG with how much each fruit increases or decreases in a category, you will land on all sorts of super dark colors INSTEAD of the black.

I don't actually think you're doing anything wrong. Follow the calculator's recommended feeding order, and if you're off, try again as your chances will be much better.

Don't reset to yellow after you've got to brown or midnight blue--light yellow is much farther away from black than brown or dark blue is. You'll need less fruit to get to black from a dark brown or dark blue if it didn't work.

I parked it at the apartment with no intention of going back to it.
It started as midnight blue and after 2 failed attempts, I looked at the wiki to see if I could work it out myself. At which point I decided to revert it back to the base colour desert yellow and start over. I fastidiously followed the guide of adding in extras if I got no message only to get a dark blue. I then checked what it needed with the calculator again and got a green. And finally it ended up at a poop brown colour. It is just an inane money pit.

I could handle the luck side of things if it gave you a result after each application. But no, it requires multiple steps of possible inaccuracies, and then you don't get an answer until 6 hours later.

It is too open ended with no guarantee of a return. You make this gamble everyday for eternity and still not get what you want.

there is a black chocobo mount if you're just looking to ride/fly but outside of that the companion is not as useful outside of hunts, maps, or fates. an if you're looking to level it up in multiple professions that too is going to be a massive gil sink sadly. but really only the dps and healer stance are good the tank one is really not that great.

It was many years ago when I did mine and I never bothered changing his colour. It was difficult back then with not a lot of information on how to do it and how to get certain colours as this was probably when it first was released. I think they really need to look and fix it. I do use my companion a lot in the world it should not be stuck in the past just make it easier for players.

Mine has been set to tank since HW where I lvled him to 20, where you have all skill points. I never spawn him for combat anymore. He has only ever been used as a mount since then.

I got mine to midnight blue in HW without any issues. Something has changed since then. This is the first time since HW release that I have tried changing his colour. If I get a house on the next lottery run, then I may go back to it. I won't be spending anymore gil on this. I reckon I blew out 250k on fruits this time.
