For me it seems the simplest solution to this would be to add some kind of an in game element to all forum contests so that everyone would be able to take part in them. Using the current contest as an example, players could take an in game screenshot related to their "wish" and post it in the contest thread.

I still don't quite understand how the Garuda contest took place in game though...
Let it go. It's a level 1 scarf with no stats. If they could make it available to all they would .

    Yay \o/ an EU event!

Entry is limited to residents of the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Entries received from residents of other European countries may appear on the official FINAL FANTASY XIV Forum thread for the contest but will NOT be eligible to win a prize.
    <- Belgium...

(Just fooling around lol. I don't really mind it.)

Don't know why people insist on complaining every time there is a new event like this.

The European Union is not a single country. Each country has its own government, its own laws, and its own courts interpreting those laws. Contests are a topic that have a lot of laws written about them, in order to prevent a "contest" from becoming a "scam."

Some countries may require a contest to be held in the local official language (to make it easier to catch a scam without a translator). Other countries may require a contest to be held only within its own borders (to prevent a "Nigerian International Lottery"). And how easy it is to hold a contest in two separate countries depends on how similar the laws in those two countries are.

Even in the US, "nationwide" contests often exclude certain US states because of differences in state laws. Just try a web search for the phrase "offer not valid in" for examples.

If you don't like the situation, write your national legislators. There's really not much more S-E can do.

Thanks for the dev responses, but like I said, if other game developers can successfully propose contests that involve publicly submitting sensitive data such as a picture of your face taken from your Facebook account for a chance to win a very real prize (winners are selected by the devs), what exactly is halting YOUR contest? it doesn't seem NEARLY as delicate.

I know that for example, language laws in Quebec will forbid the contest to take place if all the details concerning the rules, procedures and prize claims aren't also available in French (same goes for France, normally). I'm originally from Quebec, I live in Belgium now.

The game isn't localized in Italian or Spanish, these players are pretty much forced to play in one or another of a select few languages they may not be familiar with, they obviously weren't your priority when you made the game, but they're allowed to participate? Come on.

I can not believe for a single moment you people are doing your best to open up these contests to more countries. That's just not good enough and you're really looking for an easy excuse.

Why don't you make contests for the smaller countries once in a while? I know it's just a low-level scarf, that's bessides the point. The point is that people outside of the big 4-5 european countries constantly get SHAFTED on contests like this, and no one ever seems to think it's a problem or wants to actually do anything about it.

What do you want us to do? All move to France? Be serious.

Why wouldn't Reps do their best to open up these contests to more countries? Just give a valid reason.

Making a contest for 1, 10 or 100 countries takes exactly the same amount of workload (Reps wise), besides maybe having to review more entries to determine winners. I doubt that SE is so lazy to review entries that they would restrict these contests...

We all acknowledge that the contest itself isn't a big deal (and if you ask me, the scarf is pretty underwhelming), but the idea that they're willing to exclude a chunk of their playerbase with these things, leaves a bad taste in my mouth no matter how good their intentions are.

Hopefully this will be the last time they do this and that they will sort it out the next time they have a similar contest.
