Granted. But it seems shortsighted to do this at this particular point when subs are desperately needed to maintain a healthy player count, and considering this was also something purely cosmetic without any bearing on gameplay.

This assumes that it was SE that pressured the dev to shut down the plugin, and that their motive was simply to stop modding / plugin usage.

I'll RP in another game, but not in FFXIV, where they actually have (fun) content to do when I'm not RPing. Funny thing is, even the big competitor has addons/plugins to help with RPing.

Has anyone ever played MUDs before? You know, those text-based predecessors to MMOs where you emoted your character actions? Is it such a devastating setback to emote your character's actions in FFXIV?

Never used any of this and yep, I'll just keep roleplaying the way I always did. You don't need ANY addons to do RP, especially not these degenerate ones. RP's always been about imagination and creativity and some of the people complaining have none of both.

I'm currently in the process of writing up a lot of things etiquette wise, and charter related. So while I may not participate (I produce music and landscape, so my time is random to say the least), I will at least pass them onto people that I know will use them correctly. Fixing things requires work, and currently i'm in the B category of BAMCIS (good acronym) atm. Will it go somewhere? Who knows, but I wouldn't be doing it if people didn't ask for it.

I never RPed in the first place (which makes being on Dynamis feel even worse because I'm on "the wrong data center" now), and something like the Mare shut down isn't going to incentive me to try when I'm aware of just how prudishly spiteful a lot of the community apparently is.

I don't doubt that Mare users could have been annoying and harassing even, especially with their code spam and asking for codes coupled with their expectations of others to use mods and excluding them if they don't, but the alternative to them doesn't seem any less obnoxious and exclusionary if all the celebrating about Mare's shut down is anything to go by. Same kind of clique attitude, just SFW instead of NSFW.

This sort of mimics my feelings on the matter - I have never seen someone excluded from RP due to not using mods. I don't see how "hey do you use this" as being some sort of offending comment. I do however see a lot of spite over folks using mods and it sounds more like folks chose to self exclude due to missing out. I feel sometimes folks need to accept that folks will not want to do things the way they do them and see a lot of "well I am superior because I don't need mods" attitude which seems to miss the point - much like someone being proud of playing baseball despite not owning a catchers mitt.

I don't see this changing the world - but I suspect in the future your going to see more factioning as folks will make a replacement and gatekeep it to ensure that those that do not partake are not given info that could undermine it.
