RP will not die from this; look at other "dead" MMO's like SWTOR that still have an RP community. It will lose an advantage over other MMO's that it once had, so those who are not thrilled on Dawntrail already will have one more excuse to leave. Most communities are giving the situation two weeks to see what happens before making a choice. A good way to explain it would be if SE deleted dancer from the game, sure it would not effect everyone, and you can play a different job, but those who play for that might lose the only thing making them wait until 8.0 and be done with Dawntrail.

In two weeks a new one might be up and running anyway under a different name if it takes SE three years to act just make a new one its not like the ability to make a new one is gone. FF14 has not changed its code so if anything, this might just be shareholder appeasement to look like they did something. If they wanted to kill it they would update the code to make the current means no longer possible, but that is far more expensive and harder to do than a lawsuit.

If SE took this long to give all the races hats and chat bubbles they are a decade behind modders still.

That's the thing, though. Whether it was SE pulling the plug doesn't matter too much, but the timing couldn't be worse. We already have a declining player base due to a divisive expansion, and subsequent patches, despite getting better, have not recuperated that initial loss. Seemingly out of nowhere, this happens, and it would without a shadow of a doubt hurt the player base further, especially the RP community.

Perhaps there would be another one running in a few weeks or months. The question, however, is whether it would bring back the players that it has lost.

In the end the only thing I know for certain is this has to do with money in one way or another. Anything more we don't know unless SE discloses it during a shareholder meeting. When an expac projected to make a lot fails to meet expectations, cash shops seem to be the go too to appease shareholders. A history lesson, WoW big failure Warlord of Draenor was their first huge flop, and it was the same expansion that introduced the WoW token which was a year into the expansion's launch.

Despite everyone's personal opinions on Dawntrial, its reputation seems not to be meeting expectations. One item in the cash shop is around one month sub, so if losing the Mare can be even to the amount of people buying cash shop then thats a break even.

A very big part of the "declining playerbase" is just FFXIV returning to realistic pre-Shadowbringers numbers after the WoW-exodus and COVID inflation.

In general tho, the impact that losing a 3rd party too has on the community is minimal, and a new one that does the same thing as what gets shot down is generally not far behind.
