A lot was wrong with 1.0 and its unfriendliness to user hardware was absolutely one of them.
Oh I agree, but that also meant they literally couldn't make 1.0 it work on the PS3. But since they promised it would be on that console one of the top priorities for ARR was to make it run on the PS3. Which in hindsight should not have been a thing.

True, my bad. For some reason I remember ARR releasing in 2014.
But even 3 months before release SE, as a major 3rd party Playstation developer, would have probably already had information about the PS4's specs and a dev kit for it.
Potentially even earlier if you take into account that some other studios that released PS4 launch titles would have needed to develop for the new console way before it's release.

Put simply, it running at 30 FPS and struggling to load 300+ hunt trains doesn't matter so long as it isn't impact the devs ability to add new features.

Obviously, only SE has those exact numbers, but it's hardly a reach to suggest a not insignificant amount of XIV players haven't upgraded when 50% of the entire Playstation playerbase hasn't. If that number remains high, there's simply no chance they drop support and risk losing them. Especially not when the overall XIV playerbase has been in a pretty steady decline since DT launched.

Not according to these articles which place the PS4 userbase at 59M

    https://gamerant.com/ps5-sales-numbers-compared-ps4/
    https://tech4gamers.com/playstation-users-half-ps4/

Even in your article, it still cites 50% of the Playstation install base is actively playing the PS4.
Well both our articles are out of date as they were last year. Looking around though since June this year it's no longer an even split.

Hopefully they slash the price come Black Friday/Cyber Monday

Considering the fact that Yoshi-P seems to be strongly considering bringing FFXIV to the Switch 2, I wouldn't be very worried.

Square Enix is actually very good about stretching their MMOs life span on hardware to the absolute possible limit. I'm not saying they definitely won't drop support for the PS4, so I would start putting back money little-by-little if you can, but I'd honestly be surprised if they drop PS4 support at 8.0.

This is due to the tariffs against goods from Japan.

Somewhat related to future console support, Yoshi-P has mentioned in an interview about positive discussions with Nintendo regarding a release of Final Fantasy XIV for the Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 is largely similar to the Xbox Series S in terms of real world gaming performance so there's no reason why we couldn't have a playable release for Switch 2.

Yup, the Switch 2 hovers around PS4 Pro / Series S in terms of performance. That's more or less why I mentioned to Rayne6665 above not to worry

The Switch 2 and Series S are arguably much better than the PS4 Pro due to user newer CPU and GPU architectures. I'd still exercise a degree of caution in expecting PS4 support to continue, especially when other mainstream live service/MMO games, such as Genshin Impact, are dropping PS4 support despite starting out on that platform.

Several other live service games are also dropping PS4 support this year including PUBG. PC-specific titles aren't far behind either in only supporting Windows 11 compatible PCs plus more Secure Boot/TPM requirements for anti-cheat solutions. Even World of Warcraft, a game that historically ran on toaster PCs, is listing an effectively PS5-equivalent system as the minimum system requirements for their next expansion pack due to release in the first half of 2026.

Late 2025 into 2026 is the time period where most major players wrap up their PS4 (and equivalent supports). If your favourite live service or MMO hasn't yet announced an end of life date for their PS4 client, I would recommend preparing for it just in case... even if that just means being prepared to quit the game.

It was widely reported this week that Hoyoverse will discontinue PS4 support in Genshin Impact next year – but this is not an isolated move, with many other operators of major online and live service titles also eyeing up the timeline for dropping PS4 support.

Some of those decisions will be accelerated by technical concerns (Genshin Impact’s huge, streaming game world is especially awful on the slow hard drive that shipped in the PS4, and benefits massively from the SSD in more recent systems), but the tipping point is already in sight; installed bases of newer systems are high enough for lots of companies to start turning out the lights on PS4.
