That's also the reason why they developed ARR for the PS3 in the first place, which they never should have. But they had promised that XIV would be on the PS3 all the way back in 1.0.

By the time ARR released the PS4 was already out, the PS3 was already 8 years old and it's hardware was severely limiting for the game.

This will happen even faster if the current trend of unoptimized games continues.
Monster Hunter Wilds eats almost 8GB or more of memory on it's own, 16GB is barely enough to run the game, operating system, peripheral software and a browser at the same time.

I'm of a different mindset for this. Part of the reason 1.0 failed so badly was how intensive it was on hardware. The Limsa opening in 1.0 barely ran on what was considered good gaming PCs at the time, nevermind if you had an average or below average gaming pc. A lot was wrong with 1.0 and its unfriendliness to user hardware was absolutely one of them.

Also FFXIV ARR released 3 months before the PS4 did, nevermind that during their development of ARR they wouldn't have known about the exact specifications the PS4 would have.

Oh I agree, but that also meant they literally couldn't make 1.0 it work on the PS3. But since they promised it would be on that console one of the top priorities for ARR was to make it run on the PS3. Which in hindsight should not have been a thing.

True, my bad. For some reason I remember ARR releasing in 2014.
But even 3 months before release SE, as a major 3rd party Playstation developer, would have probably already had information about the PS4's specs and a dev kit for it.
Potentially even earlier if you take into account that some other studios that released PS4 launch titles would have needed to develop for the new console way before it's release.

Then they should axe the Series S too. So we only have "proper" consoles with Series X and PS5 for onging support.

I was expecting 7.0, but I imagine 8.0 will be when it finally happens.

I mean they will eventually because even PC users experience lag in this game even with their best pc setup. Due to how badly this game is organized and coded, it's no wonder that happens. Once their spaghetti code limitation cannot work on ps4 anymore, they will blame the console for being bad. They already want to remove or limit support for win 10 and I ain't moving to 11.

They're ending support for Windows 10 because Microsoft will no longer be providing updates for the operating system. NVIDIA are also ending Windows 10 support in their GPU drivers during 2026 (not seen anything regarding AMD or Intel GPU drivers). Square Enix don't really have a choice in the matter here. You can choose to not upgrade to a newer version of Windows but sooner or later, XIV and other games will stop working on Windows 10.

MMOs have always been CPU limited games and the PS4 has a CPU that's much weaker than the minimum requirement they list for the PC version. In terms of real world performance, FFXIV on PS4 has been very rough this expansion and even if they fixed every piece of spaghetti code, the PS4 is still 12 year old hardware that just isn't cut for this MMO in the graphics overhaul era.

I hate how these topics turn into PC players being so hateful to console players like we don't bring in a huge portion of revenue for FFXIV.

I don't think people are being hateful. OP was just asking a genuine question because there are many people still playing on PS4 and I've met some people even recently that are. I've told them consistently they should plan to get a PS5 because they are really going to want the SSD, especially for large-scale content like hunts, Occult Crescent and large-scale raids.

But it is reasonable, from a date perspective, that:
    • PS4 released in 2013. By 2027, this will be around 11 years.
    • PS5 released in 2020. By 2027, this will be around 6 years.
So PS5 will be very old by then, nevermind the PS4!

To contrast that, PS1 released 1995 and PS2 released 2000. That was only 4 year gap + a few months. I saw people where I lived, at the time, upgrading pretty quick. One of them gave me their PS1 so that I had two.

I was skeptical how many players Xbox would bring to the game. I thought it was ridiculous to think we'd get some massive influx of players from Xbox that don't play on any other platform because I didn't see Xbox players as the type to play MMOs. But the truth is, I was wrong - I've met plenty of them in the game and on discord, and discord servers where I can see Members, many accounts with "Xbox" attached to them started joining around the time and it was a LOT. A good amount of them were not very discord savvy, most likely due to not using desktop discord, because obviously if they weren't playing this on another platform it's because their gaming life revolves around an Xbox.

You may be surprised just how good support FFXIV has for consoles though. People have always done Savage even on console, and even cleared Ultimates. While you might wonder how someone could possibly play with a controller, there are many controller players that wonder how someone could possibly play with a keyboard/mouse.
