Example: Have a character's portrait of our choice telling us what's current, unlock more of them over time, give different skins for the portraits that are unlocked during events (so the rewards aren't uh...idk pants we'll never wear). Make it interactable - you click something, it opens the location on a map or focuses that quest for you. This way the player "initiates their own popup" when they want to, or never if they don't care to interface w/ the game in that manner.

Of course the current engine only has Windows 95 capabilities so that's a pipe dream. For now, do what they were doing in japan in 2005 and make sure you read the newspaper to see what's going on in FF14 this week!
Okay, yea, I heard Korean-MMO and immediately started to nope out, but if it was something like this, I would actually use it a ton. I only sub once every 3 - 4 months usually for month, so I'm perpetually behind in everything, being able to see what is going on, where I can go to access 'x' and 'y' would be really good, but I don't want it popping up like a f2p game or something.

Was really the only way to explain the idea of the system. But just an example Monster Hunter does this in a way where-by everytime there in a larger festival in town your NPC friend is like; "Hey check this out" and there's a quick one time tutorial on what's happening, after that it only shows up if you want it to even on re--login, it's not all that intrucive, but informs the player that the event has started.

But yea in an MMO it shouldn't be a straigh-up pop-up, but we already have notifications that happen and it could be tied to those as a sort of "latest News" notif and if you press it it opens a journal type deal similar to something like V&C Dungeon journal with all the info there at hand with a press of a button. Oh want to see where the latest raid is? Here's a direct maplink and teleportation. Want to check your daily / weekly stuff it's all right there.
