whisper something about listening in early on when Galool Ja Ja is giving out instructions to all the claimants. I'll have to go find the exact quote later. But the idea that he was skulking around looking for information about this contest, especially since it involves the Golden City, makes sense. During one scene where Zoraal walks off, Sareel mutters to himself something along the lines of "even if you don't claim the throne, I will have the power of the golden city." Or something, again I'd have to go find it. And there's rumors of a great power within the Golden City from... a nebulous source, it sounds like it could just be a folk tale, or possibly mentioned by someone else. It's unclear.
The pressure to succeed thing is hinted at early one when people keep bringing up that he's the Resilient Son and that he's super strong and special and blah blah. But Zoraal is being all stoic so he doesn't show that it bothers him. The second hint is when Krile looks at him and is able to more or less see into his soul, and see that he harbors a deep hatred of Wuk Lamat. (Relateable for some people, I'm sure.) She mentions this after the cooking contest, where again Zoraal just looks in Wuk's direction for a few seconds and walks off without saying a word. We also know that he feels he needs to best his father because this is what finally causes him to lose the whole competition -- he fights the shade of Gulool Ja Ja in Mamook, and the Elector specifically calls out that it was stupid of him to deny his retainer's involvement. (The retainer is Sareel, so the implication is that Zoraal forbade him from interfering in the fight.) And, after getting his ass beat, Zoraal decided to try to kill the Elector to take the stone, and got his ass beat again by the shade of his father for it, and then he was disqualified. This is the first time we actually hear of Zoraal Ja showing a lot of emotion, and it's pretty much all anger and hatred in that moment.
We don't find out for 100% that it does bother him until he's actually dying, and even then that's 30 years later -- it's possible he's just been sitting in his tower getting more and more pissed off at his father and his people for three decades. But that's speculation because we needed to know Wuk Lamat is scared of the transfer pads in Solution Nine, or something. Or hell the story is super long keep all the Wuk stuff in but give us a scene where Zoraal is brooding over how much his hate is festering.
