There is a difference. If you join halfway through a trial or raid, you will miss the first half of that trial or raid. New players do in fact do roulettes before they are fully caught up, but this isn't exclusively about them anyway because this game is updated with new duties every major patch for endgame players to enjoy.

Joining first time in-progress is good for alt characters, but for your first character it rather ruins the experience. Not everyone cares about the experience, but the change makes sense overall.

I don't really see an issue if it's opt-in and something you need to turn on. Can just leave it off to be able to join in progress as normal. I prefer that on my alts. And I have a very fond memory of week 1 of Dun Scaith. Because of join in progress, I ended up running that raid backwards. First an instance with the final boss, then one at third, then one at second, and finally one at the beginning. Rather than spoil my experience, it's been something I think back on and laugh about because it was so random that my sequential runs managed to stay in perfect backwards procession like that.

they're saying in-progress queue is a toggle. not being able to join in-progress in content you haven't done before is not a toggle, that's a permanent change.

No there isn't, trials and raids are binary things, either cleared or uncleare. What you meant to say was alliance raids, which is not what the other poster was referring to.
Normal raids and trials have zero reason to have this functionality forcibly on, this is just another case of the laziest possible implementation of something being the one they chose.

It's usually normal modes. Often Extremes either wouldn't hold your hand that much or they'd flat out begin from second phase.

They could make an additional check box under "Join Party in Progress" that says "Enable joining party in progress for duties yet to be completed for the first time" and it can be off by default.

Not entirely; the Alexander raids exist, as well as trials with checkpoints like SoS.

Regardless, this feature should have a toggle.
