Perception is central to this, yes.

The issue, however, is the ability of many Discord groups to understand how their words and actions impact how they are perceived.

To give a topical example, the arrogance and gall of anyone would would tell someone that they need to change their view of community to lead a better life is... I mean, you may not understand why you're perceived as hate-filled, self-obsessed elitists, but I certainly can.
