Correction, Harriar is a British design purchased by the U.S. Marine Corp. for the vertical take off was well suited for launch off LPD, and similar ships, which transported marines and could support helicopters before.

Actually the US Marine Corps uses AV8, which are based on the British Harriers...but they are American built...
