Not going back, but it's noticeable that when WoW starts competing the gulf between the devteams is more easy to see. I honestly hope they start tossing more digs at the SE-devteam.

We'll see how they tackle housing, Wildstar has had the best system so far.

    How FFXIV competes? lol.
Dragonriding vs slight mount tilt. That's how FFXIV competes. Painful skyboxes that limit your lackluster flying too.
But to be fair, FFXIV doesn't need to compete. Being 2nd is good enough with the lack of competition.

curious to see what will SE do : )
"multidollar" companies like these two giants seem to only get some incentive to move when someone pokes to what they consider their territory.

I preface this with saying, yes the FFXIV housing system sucks and definitely needs to be overhauled.

    That being said...

I find it hilarious that modern Blizzard says something, and people still swoon and throw money at their computer, despite proving time and time again they do not deserve that faith. The only thing modern Blizzard does not disappoint in is disappointment. Why not wait until all the information is out before we start tossing the rose petals out?

that callout about not losing your house if you're unsubbed was so based. i hope they continue to target xiv like this; maybe it'll make xiv do better.

This first section's bolded bit: "Having many housing zones conflicts with the second pillar of designing a feature that is “Deeply Social.” In a world where players can live in many different zones, they become increasingly spread out and even with aggressive sharding, the chance of seeing other players, much less interacting with them, drops quickly."

Combined with: "We’d much rather do a great job with a small number of zones than do a passable job on a large number (or come up with solutions that take the player out of the world into their own personal instance of a zone)"

This sentence format is "We'd rather do x, than y or z." z being personal instances.

They want people seeing and interacting with each other naturally, so it's open world housing and not instanced.

Because of that, it necessitates limited housing. FFXIV and WoW both decided to go for that neighborhood, naturally meet and talk to other people goal, that come with the exact same problems. People wanted infinite, instanced housing for FFXIV but Yoshi P said no because he valued neighborhoods. Those were directly at odds with one another. WoW is taking the halfway approach of allowing groups of ppl to create instanced wards, but it doesn't mention that for individual players by themselves, which means, they deal with a housing system similar to FFXIV. For them not to have the same problems, they're going to have to renig on some of these promises or goals.

"If you've seen people quitting in this game, you will see that sometimes it's because they lost their decorated house."
They lost their decorate house because they never went inside or quit the game temporarily already. If you only played the game for a house, that you didn't step inside of 45 days, there's something else majorly missing in that argument. You didn't want to play the game at all at that point in time, but tried to keep the house in case that ever changed in the future.

But WoW is essentially running a gamble that there's enough instanced wards of FC's/Linkshells ppl (imagine Island Sanctuary but a housing ward) to where the normal, public wards for individuals aren't swarmed out like FFXIV. If they do get swarmed out, it's over. It's gonna be a bigger mess than FFXIV housing is and they're gonna have to add the same features.
You can make entire private neighborhoods/wards too. That means the system is going to be effectively infinite. There have been games that have done something similar before. Wildstar comes to mind.

I suspect they're designing the system in a way that actually makes sense and are scaling the number of instances/wards automatically when they fill up. FFXIV could've done this years ago but has chosen to only increase housing capacity once a year or so.

Can you cite where they stated that because I'm going off of:

Private Neighborhoods created by groups of friends or guilds to inhabit, progress, and customize together.
So, while an individual player can have a house, a community can have a Neighborhood!

This sounds like it's only infinite if it's a group of players that are fine being isolated. But any individual players will not be able to use this feature at all.

XIV's housing system is so rediculously dogshit, I cant believe people unironically defend it.

That's nice. WoW already did their first attempt at housing with garrisons, and that was an absolute disaster. They can keep their toxic playerbase while I have fun over here

if you wanna see some crazy shit, go to the housing forums and watch these guys trip over themselves to defend the absolute state of housing in xiv.

It's only trash because they have the goal of having open world housing, which is the same goal WoW just stated. Only difference is that WoW is undoing a decade of fixes made as part of listening to housing feedback for some reason and thinking closed off/private housing for groups only is enough to fix the problem they're about to create. Other MMO's don't have that goal so they don't have housing problems and can just spawn infinite housing for everyone. Yoshi P hasn't budged on wanting a neighborhood feel in 5+ years, so I doubt Blizzard is gonna budge either since at least historically they listen even less to the playerbase than he does.
