If those words were used in the actual LOTR books, it would in fact be ridiculous to say "those words don't exist in that universe".

Like I'm not arguing about writing quality (I haven't played Dragon Age: Gamer Tears and don't plan to), I'm just saying that if something is represented in a canon then by definition it exists in that universe.

How about this then, so long as the concept is known in the universe, they'd have a word for it, and so long as they a word for it, then it's completely fine for them to use the same word as we use in the real world, otherwise you are either asking for queerness to be exclusively a rare and unknown thing in fiction, or for fiction to exclusively use different words for various things, if it is the former, get over it, if it is the latter, then you should also be calling FFXIV's worldbuilding poor for using words like "bear" and "horse", and god forbid, "dog".

Nothing wrong with taking inspiration from real world cultures. Though it is ironic that was a selling point for DT and it was the most surface level garbage I could imagine. We got better cultural exposure in the Azim Steppe than all of Dawntrail. They have to not play it safe and stop worrying about angering the Twitter piss-babies. Interesting stories need conflict and depth. Not Tacos and not a Saturday Morning Cartoon's idea of conflict.

Whats interesting is that the latin american community isn't easily offended like the north american one, so they could've done a lot with the cultural theme and it would've been a lot more interesting.

I'll give you an example, no latin american I know appreciates north americans referring to them as Latinx, they like latino or latina. The spanish language is gendered, and they don't appreciate other cultures rewriting their language to fit their sensibilities.

Oh I'm aware. I'm half Mexican myself (though my Spanish is mierda) and I'm mostly annoyed by how the cultures were treated with kid gloves. They had an opportunity for something real cool. Most Latinos embrace the colonial history to some extent because that's in our culture and literally in our DNA. But instead they just did Tacos, Alpacas, and the equivalent of a New Yorker's idea of Texas after watching half a John Wayne movie during a red-eye flight while nursing a hangover.

But the Twitter piss-babies I was referring to was pretty much entirely from a North American audience. It's just annoying they'll try to appeal to the sensibilities of people who don't matter.

And since I'm ranting. The fact that All Saint's Wake wasn't at least partially inspired by Day of the Dead is a real shame.

What are you referring to, when you say "...wasn't at least partially inspired by..."? The event is for AllHallowTide, which encompasses All Hallows Eve (Halloween), All Hallows Day (All Saints Day, Samhain) and All Souls Day (Day of the Dead).

Different countries place more importance on a particular day over others, depending on their culture, but Oct 31, Nov 1 and Nov 2 are celebrated all across Western Christendom.

Garlean empire was perfect example of this.

They all originate in cold climate, have ushankas, mine fantasy oil and are imperialistic. Concepts clearly inspired by Russia.

Except they have magitech, inability to use magic and a lot of other unique aspects, making them interesting faction/culture.

I could've been clearer. I meant aesthetically. "Oh WoL! We have an envoy from Tural and want to make him feel at home so we want to decorate All Saint's Wake how they do in Tural!" Then we can get some bright colors, papel picado, mexican marigolds, alebrijes, and calacas.

Oooh! I'd love that... They could do that next year, like... petition them for a theme?

I meaaaaan, I wasn't talking about that though? I was talking about a very specific example in Veilguard. Please don't put words in my mouth, I even gave a writing example of how they COULDVE made the person come out as trans without using modern words. So don't try and paint me as some transphobe. Hell they could've even made an in universe word for it and made it apart of the worldbuilding and explained said word. But they chose the easy way out.
FFXIV's worldbuilding is poor at times, and I have a hunch its also because the translation team (Koji) wilded out on a lot of things and changed meanings around. While there are bears and horses in the world of FFXIV, I know what you mean, things like calling a miqo'te a "cat" when in Eorzea, the nearest thing to keeping a cat as a pet was a Coeurl-kitten. They sometimes forget how their own world and cultures work, and I bet its only gonna get worse with these new writers.
