Emote Monetization needs to Stop.

Unfortunately, people buy them. Every time we get a new thing on the cash shop, people jump to buy it. I'm guilty of it. Most people are guilty of it from time to time, but so much of the in-game idle culture is just having the newest thing. It's not going to go away because some of us find it unessarry. If you think it's stupid, don't buy it.

I just wish with the barrels of money they make every day with that cash shop, we could get more robust content, but greed is eternal as the Rules of Acquisition would have me believe. I just wish we had more Qol and actually fixing broken player races.

But emotes? It's just another way to nickle and dime the players who already pay 13-15 a month to play.

Look, it's Final Fantasy XIV published by Square Enix. This is a poor company that just lost 70% of its revenue last year and is essentially bankrupt. They can't afford to give you more right now. If you had a homeless person sleeping outside your house who was at death's door, would you give him money? Of course you would. So why wouldn't you help Square Enix? We live in rough times right now and we need to think about those who are less fortunate. If Square Enix goes bankrupt, hundreds of people will be unemployed. They might even become homeless. How would you feel if that happened to you? Try being more charitable to the less fortunate instead of grandstanding about $7.

Still, looking through the other responses, the idea of defending the company behind this monetization is still bad sights - it reminds me of the people who defend Nintendo, nearly every time they're questioned about their business practices.



And sure, there are people who hate the company and boycott their games, but I know SE has good developers behind it that make good games. It just comes into the realm of "Can we stop trying to milk our players for emotes?"

Because that's what it feels right now, especially with America's current economy. We already pay 13-15/mo. Give us some new emotes for free that are as high quality as this Fried Egg I've got cooking on the cement outside in Tural, and we've got a deal. In general, I wouldn't be kicking up a fuss if paid emotes only made up only 15% of all available emotes - and were account wide.

I agree, OP. It's awful and even more insulting that cash shop items are overwhelmingly not account-wide.

I would agree, up until not just emotes, but aesthetics in general, get gated behind content nobody or their second cousin wants to run anymore, and finding a group for it would require you to go so far off the beaten path that it'd just make running said content for said aesthetics not even worth it.

I get that some aesthetics, such as Lyon's hairstyle, can be considered a trophy. At the same time, that's what is contending with cash shop. What would a majority of people rather do? Bust their ass for a hairstyle they want? Or just pay 7 buckaroos to get it?

And, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the cash shop option is going to win, and so it's never going to end because of that.

Having said that, I would like to see more emotes and hairstyles get put in the game as something you can acquire through gameplay. I'd also like the effort I'd have to put in to get them to be reasonable. If I have to start hopping onto discord channels and rousing people to form a party on a specific day, at a specific time, to run a specific piece of content, all because I want a specific aesthetic, then I'd rather just buy it on the cash shop. I can't live in the game, I get limited time to play.
