On one hand, not being written like a caricature does help, absolutely. But I might still not have noticed, the snake ladies aren't Indian people, they're Indian-themed. The writers are not writing them as some "Hey look, this is what people are like in India!" thing. But if a patch came out and said they were altering the dialogue to no longer exaggerate "s" sounds as a way to be more respectful, then I'd have to assume that what hasn't been changed is direct commentary of how Indian people are, and that even the thing that was changed, probably was as well.

The FF14 writers did this to themselves. They were the ones who decided to fashion their fantasy races after real life people.
That's why the "message" is important.

Say if a company want to create a "oriental" faction with no specific replication, they probably can put together a smash up - generic visual style with pagoda structure, Cheosam, Chinese accent characters, and no one gonna be mad if it also include Korean or Japanese style in it. It's oriental, it's exotic, it's cool, that's all that matter. But if the intention is to replicate a specific country/faction ... than that's a different story. That's why people aren't very please when the spot Korean/Chinese structure in the new Assassin creed when it's supposed to replicate Japan.

Frankly, that's why company should really just shut up and stop trying to score social internet brownie point. Don't try to claim you're paying homemade to this or that. If you create a place that looks like South America, or India than well, it's just what it is, still just a fantasy place. They are critized not because of what they made, but more because of the claim they're trying to make.

That's a shame if you like story because FFXI story telling is leaps and bounds better than xiv's. It's not as fast paced so you take the story in sips instead of massive gulps, but they are not afraid to go dark with the occasional moment of levity and do not lean on the power of friendship trope as hard as xiv does, making for some more interesting ways for things to be resolved. All the expansions are their own thing too so you don't have to play them in any order and you can do them at your own pace. They even give you the option to not trigger the first cutscene that starts an expansion's story until you want to. Even side stories and job stories can get spooky or make you say, wow wth just happened. Lookin at you blue mage.

If you are a story/lore nerd, FFXI > FFXIV by a long shot.

Case in point, the devs of Ghost of Tsushima- a game that by all accounts did its damned best to be as historically accurate as possible with liberties taken only for gameplay- were granted honorary ambassador status, because they'd genuinely taken the time to understand and reflect the culture and people of the period honestly, good and bad.

If Tural had human sacrifice, violent intercultural wars that were still ongoing, and we were helping Gulool Ja Ja- a man who'd been overseas and seen the *chance* that it could be done away with- put an end to the conflicts by smacking down the main players with him? Probably would have been accepted as a much more level-headed story.

Instead every culture is tacos, ponchos, and One Obligatory Quirk To Set Us Apart From The Others.

The birds were Vanu Vanu 2. Their wind magic had almost no relevance. We didn't meet them on a mountain, we met them in a swamp. We didn't meet them talking about helping their fledglings learn to glide between islands, or why they had a boat float as part of their festival. They just did. Why? It's their Hat.

The Pelu Pelu? Nothing but traders. We see almost nothing else in the MSQ. We don't learn why that developed, only that it is. We don't have any 'The Pelu Pelu were often nomadic, relying on trade and their alpacas to make a living and have food/resources' with some thinking they were basically "Romani: South American Edition", and that gives rise to both their insular culture with the literal hats and the trading/alpacas.

Even the dragons dealt with memory and rememberance better than the Yok Huy. Their petroglyphs could have been even more of a cultural thing- Yok Huy carve their own petroglyphs through life, adding slabs and carving their deeds, memories, thoughts, and experiences onto them until their death, at which time the petroglyph is set up as their gravestone so that others can come and meditate on the experiences of those past. Not only would it have added a bit of depth to them, but it would have contrasted with Living Memory. You could have had discussions about petroglyphs being destroyed, aging. The trial could have been to help figure out the circumstances of a Yok Huy's death, to make sure the final entry on their petroglyph is accurate. Instead it's just... fancy gravestones.

The list goes on. There's easy ways to add depth to cultures, but they were running so far away from having any sort of 'teeth' to their cultures. It was like being gummed at the ankles by a puppy. You go 'aw, cute' and wander off.

The Mamool come closest to being 'sacrificial' but even then, it's played for sympathy, like they... *had* to resort to genocide instead of like... did nobody bring back knowledge of the outside world in those 80 years? At all? We know Gulool Ja Ja brought a Limsan sailor and a... what's that country's name... SHARLAYAN through twenty years ago! He had to take them through the Cenote! And neither of them reflected that 'gee, maybe the giant glowing rocks are muckin' about with the aether, want us to find some plants that'll help?' I mean we know Gulool and Galuf parted on good terms, so like... was that even tried? We don't get enough resistance to 'outsiders' to justify it, hell, finding a crate of supplies- seeds that Gulool had sent, *again*, like he has every year for the past twenty that they've refused to use out of dumb, stubborn pride- would have added depth to their reaction. It would have even set up for Alexandria with Wuk having to admit that eventually, there's a point where 'It's their culture' goes too far and you need to put your foot down. The twist being *that* was the challenge would have been icing on the cake. Eventually, you need to tell people 'No', and they'll be mad, and they'll hate you for it, and they'll resent you and slander you and call you names... but you're a leader. You have to do what your people need, not what they want. And if they could have stopped the pit full of dead babies by just accepting a little bit of kindness... they should have.

Just have to do the scene on Dark Knight, then your character's battle pose is dropped low enough you manage to duck under the axe.

Everything I said about Zenos...i'm sorry (|Please forgive me|) I rather have his zombie corpse continue to chase me down begging for another 1v1 irl in game then to put up with this Black hole Mary Sue Princess any longer. If she's in 7.1 onwards I'm quitting.

Let the guy rest. He did his part and achieve his wet dream of a no-holds-barred-1v1.
Though i suspect they might reanimate his corpse again for round two or maybe get a uninspired 1-to-1 copy
