Kindof wild and disheartening reading people call the VA a "white person forcing an accent" when the actress is of Puerto Rican descent. Please do a little research.... y'all are insufferable at best.

It's literallly a white person forcing an accent. You cannot say you're a different ethnicity when you're clearly not. I'm a born and bred south american - I can't just say that "Actually, I'm from Portugal" because I have some distant portuguese ancestry. I've also has been all over the continent and experienced multiple forms of different speech patterns and accents, and had to study them for part of my job as I work in an area related to linguistics and speech.

Sena Bryer has a pure american accent with zero latino inflections whatsoever, and has self-admitted as not being latino. I don't know what the hell is going on with the "half-puerto rican side", but no accent was inherited, and it is enormously racist of you to assume that just because you're half-something, you immediately get the accent.

Furthermore, this isn't an issue with just Wuk either. Every accent I've heard on Dawntrail is extremely put on by american actors that tend to claim a non-existant (or too distant to matter) accent to get the job, that range from just kind of bad at best (Koana) to hilariously racist at worse (Captain King Gulool Ja Ja).

But PLEASE, tell the native speaker that he's wrong.

Pretty ironic to tell people to do research when you are the ... I'll put it blunty - uneducated here. How about you picking up a book or take a class to study about the very subject that you're pretending to care so much about?

- Accent is not a heritage or a race or even a DNA thing.

- Accent is an environment thing.

- You take a new born Chinese and and raise them in France, they will grow up with a French accent or vice versa. If that Chinese later on in their life try to use a Chinese accent, than yes they will be forcing an accent, even though they're Chinese heritage.

- Human develop our accent subconsciously as part of our survival instinct, to not stand out, to adapt and fit in better with the community we live in.

- Accent is not an identity of where you are from.

- Accent is an identity of where you grow up.

- Being a descent of wherever has zero impact on your accent, unless you also grew up at the same place you were born than it just means the two things overlape.

Hi, south american here. We do not sound like that when speaking english, she sounds like a european spanish speaking english. Said it before and I'll say it again: Of course not all south americans will sound the same, but there are some common inflections that we share due to the nature of south american spanish that she just doesn't have.

I would even argue that Koana's VA forced it a little, because he sounds as if he's doing an Antonio Banderas impression sometimes.

Also, I always find it funny when americans make a distinction between "white people" and "latin americans" as if white latin americans don't exist. It's hilarious.

Just because someone has puerto rican parents doesn't mean they will have the accent or perform it accurately if they didn't grow constantly hearing it or are used to practicing it constantly.

I know for a fact because when I started speaking english, I was told by an american friend that my accent reminded him of Borat, but now that's completely gone.

Yes, this is very true.

What I'm saying is do we require the person to not only be Latam, but have the accent naturally? If so, that's fair.

I personally feel like you should be able to be representative so long as you have that background, and I can't say for sure whether she's "putting it on" since I don't know her personally.

I understand if people disagree, and I'm not going to harp on it more, I concede and I take everything that people are saying in, am learning and will do further research of my own as well.

It's literally just people shitflinging to derail the thread or to purposefully discredit the other extremely valid points by association. It has precisely zero bearing on the actual complaints of the extremely racist accents in DW, and should be soundly ignored.

Only if they had earn the right to be represent, because that's not an entitlement . The current climate had make identity and social politic a very lucrative business, and people will try to exploit every "assets" available to them, not because they care, but because it's benefit them. I'll give you another example:

- Remember years ago when Elizabeth Warren claimed she's identified as a native-American and it blew up in her face?

- Say if you were a native American and only have two choices, which you would prefer to represent you:

+ a Non-native American who actually live among the tribes and understand their days to day struggle.

+ Someone who lived their whole life as outsider but think they're entitled to the identity claim because of a blip in their DNA test.


Now I'm sure the folks from South America would love to have a representative. But only if they are given an authentic representation, not getting insulted by a fake one. Because in the latter case, which is this case, claiming they represent a group is a farce for the shake of benefit. The only thing they represent is their own self-interest.
