It is not just the house, it is all the hours, days, weeks of furnishing, or if it is a small FC house, something you and your friends may have been putting work into it every day for a year to level up airships and submersibles. People will not lightly unsub if it means losing something that took a year to build up and the memories of everyone's effort for it, and will take a year of work again to get again if you should return in the future.

Sentimental tokens we can ill afford to see lost forever, matter.

I have a friend list that still includes the character of a dear friend who was taken by cancer over a year ago, and I know I can never move my character to another data center without my Friend list getting wiped, and I will never get my friend back on there.

I agree that people that don't play should let go, but for myself instanced housing is boring and I would lose interest on it very fast.

When the choice they give you is, "Keep paying even when this game is no longer worth the sub fee, or you will lose things you care about forever.", then of course there are people that are going to feel like it is a hostage situation!
Instanced housing is terrible, they did it with island sanct and you see how many people actually like that or an on there. For myself my island is still level 3 I been there exactly one time. Limited Ressource is cool because it makes you feel good about having it. Watch people neglect their instanced house in 2-3 weeks of making them so.

Imagine paying a monthly subscription to a game you're (currently) not enjoying just to keep your virtual house.

Do you guys not have any self respect or something?

Well.. this is an unfortunate coincidence I imagine, but I am one of those people who have their island sanctuary maxed out, all the building upgrades and special landmarks, and someone who uses the option to have minions roaming around areas of my island. I have actually received other players on my island as guests. That it let me swim in crafting and gathering materia through the post-Endwalker was a nice added bonus. Could have done with more personalization than just outdoor furniture, but it was a first step.

Also, player apartments are basically already instanced housing because they have no physical space inside the housing zones, the apartment building lobbies are just a well disguised nexus for zoning into these instances. People use those. I would love if they just allowed us to expand apartments trough buying additional permits to have an attached patio (for gardening) and even attach a workshop.

EDIT: P.S. Check my World on my profile next to my posts. I am on Crystal. Things around housing are different here, and I assure you people here could definitely find use for some form of instanced housing side by side with the housing districts we already have.

It's easy to tell someone to let go of something when you haven't put any of the work in to attain it, decorate it well, and spend 6+ months of logging in every other day to set up the submersibles.

$15 is hardly a drop in the bucket, and I wouldn't call myself unhappy, but being unable to take breaks for longer than a few weeks is an annoyance from time to time.

If they moved to instanced housing I wouldn't complain, I hardly ever see my neighbors and I don't even talk to them even if I see them

I have the Island maxed out but it was grindy. That has nothing to do with the fact that it’s instanced though: it was the Island quest. The reason my island is now pretty much abandoned is that I got everything out of it and contrary to my house, it is in the middle of nowhere and provides no utility. My house is my base: I have retainers, an armoire, an fc chest, a mailbox, the Unending Journey, vendors, a money making garden and a dummy. I can also decorate both the interior and exterior, transport is cheap and direct from whereever and there’s a market board right beside it + peace and quiet I don’t get in a city. Peace and quiet and the ability to decorate the exterior were the only things on the Island. There wasn’t even a retainer bell in Moraby Drydocks.

I’d he happy with intanced housing and the Island was a missed opportunity.

Yeah, I should delete my post to avoid confusion. Thanks for clarifying though.

Yoshi P: We want you to play other games if you're not having fun in XIV.

Also Yoshi P: Unlike other MMOs, we won't destroy your house if you're not subscribed.

Also also Yoshi P: Lol. We lied. Putting in more housing is effort. We're going to destroy your houses after all. Better stay subscribed to the game that makes you miserable, or we'll blow up all your millions of gil, and hundreds of hours of raiding/crafting trophies. Because screw you, that's why.

This kind of misses the point. Just because someone might not feel the game is worth playing over a specific period doesn't mean they actively want to quit entirely. Case in point, I went through a spell where I barely logged in for over three months. I still had every intention of coming back but if I let my sub lapse beyond 45 days, I'd lose my house and basically never have a chance at getting it back.

If the whole demolition system was simply about clearing out space for players with no intention of coming back, they could extend it to the length of a given patch. It achieves the same thing but actually allows players to take breaks without wiggling around 45 day periods. They won't do this because it locks you in and there's no incentive to change that.

Even if you transfer, your friend list remains intact. If it's within the same region, you just have to press the little connection symbol that appears next to their name.

Island Sanctuary isn't instanced house. It's just a random instance zone with an objective based system and quite literally nothing else. As Toutatis outlined, you have none of the basic utilities housing provides. Hence why people either visit it once a week for five minutes to put in their weekly spreadsheet or have abandoned it altogether.

Actual instanced housing would essentially be what Apartments should have been except bigger and potential access to things like a market board. It's widely successful in just about every other MMO or heck, even lifestyle games like the Sims. FFXIV is literally one of the only holdouts clinging to a dated system that hasn't worked for years. They just don't want to accept the whole neighborhood aspect doesn't work when you can't meet the demand. Not to mention, most players simply don't care to social around their houses.

I know they can provide something that I like more, they've done it before and until recently. But until we reach that point, I really feel like I could need a break, to expel that disappointing content from my mind and also to show my dissatisfaction. I know I'm far from being alone in that position.

Thing is, taking a break means losing your house(s), if you have one, that is. Usually, I'm fine with this, that's the rules. I've played every other month when they started the Zero arc and the lazy EW relic weapons because I didn't like it at all.

The problem now, is that we need to look more than two years back to find content that was unanimously acclaimed. Dawntrail got very a mixed reception, and the EW post-content expansion wasn't any better, at least in terms of story.

I'm fine being held hostage to keep my house if I'm taking a break "on purpose". But here, I feel like they're really pushing players away from the game.

Until they set back higher standards for the content that is released, I would love them to pause the housing demolition. If I take a break and lose my house in which I invested a lot of time, I probably won't come back ever gain to FFXIV.

I don't feel like being held hostage with no guarantee that the past two years where an experiment that didn't work well and that they'll go back to better standards.
Nah people that aren't playing shouldn't have the perks of being a consent player.

Take a break or quit and let the rest gamble on your former property

I let my house go a long time back and I don't miss it at all. The system sucks and I won't participate in it.
