Gritty realism is a sort of rejection of romantic fantasy. And it resonates well with modern western culture, specifically young males whom have grown up in an era of sarcastically overplaying the tropes of old. Making the classic tales into parody. A meta reaction to the idea of lighthearted mysticism.

It's not just a matter of appealing to the largest market. It's a sort of self fulfilling prophecy. People want these things because that's all that's marketed because that's what companies believe that's what customers want because that's all that's marketed because that's what companies believe that's what customers want because that's all that's marketed because that's what companies believe that's what customers want yadda yadda yadda.

In time, a rejection of this culture will happen, and grown men will start to be fond of rainbows, kittens, unicorns and sweets and neon clothing will become a common sight. Then that culture will be rejected and so on, and so on. History on repeat sense the beginning of art.

Almost makes me want to wait until the honeymoon period of first/second month is over before I even get near it. Actually, with the genre as it is now, should wait that one - two month period by default.
There has been alot of issues in the beta. THose that play know what I mean. THe imbalances were a nightmare. World versus world implementation was poorly done feels like a First person shooter camp and nuke respawners failure.

THe graphics are not what was expected. Sure soem areas look nice, but distance draw in epic battles is pathetic. Nice looking dragon, static flat background in distance. It actaully feels like a a battle segment from Lost Odyssey.

Some of the enemies animations are poorly done. They flip flop directions with little smooth animation. IT needs to be revamped before launch.

Feels like Aion, plays like wow. There are actaully aspects of AION that are more inspiring then GW 2.

Typical spam spell, spam attack, very unrealistic fighting. It's great for a 12 year old that loves loud noises and flashign lights all over the screen (if they don't have a seazure). I find it annoying, unrealistic, and liek a button mashign arcade game. Games liek that make me appreciate FFXI more often.

Trion (Rift) was founded by the core designer of Wow's UI and engine, NCSoft lead CEO, who also was the CEO for Xbox Live, as well as founders from everquest. Probably why there content and fixes are so fast, so often, more so then an MMO before it.

GW 2 jsut feels unpolished, weak, and a button mashing fan feast of unrealism. The art direction needs work, and doesn't have the SE umpf. It feels liek wow with AION influence. THe enviroments are closer to wow, and don't have lush detail like XIV, the higher textures, or the landsape detail of RIft.

Hoepfully the final release will eb very different. As it is now, it really isn't ready for a summer release.

Not surprised honestly. I actually find it funny now as the bandwagon crashes for each MMO release. It probably won't get better until the amount of AAA MMO releases slow down. GW2 ,regardless of the time released, will be a hurricane disaster once the servers are live. Every MMO gets its true test once the playerbase is flooding the servers and thousands to millions of players are speaking to npcs and running around pressing buttons at the same time. All MMOs fail this initial test, regardless of the scale, when compared to others.

MMOs can't be properly reviewed until a year later, but the bandwagon expects years of everything at day one or they'll be off to the next "WoW Killer".

I don't know, I mean it can be hard on developers to fidn fresh and new, when certain things have coem to work, and changign can make it worse, or going to extreme can just make it rediculous. I was so excited about Guild wars 2, never really being into the first one. Then with actual play, it honestly felt generic and bland.

Maybe it is becuase I sepnt more time then any other mmo with XI. I would play a logn time, take a break, go play wow, play rift max some jobs, then always end up back with XI tehen back to XIV.

I like too have 2 main mmo's. THe ony other I play is Rift now. Maybe if they came out with an Elder scrolls MMO.

XIV just has more detail and color range in the graphics then GW 2. Less cartoony. I jsut do nto like spam spam spam. unrealticaly fast castign and fighting arcade style MMo's or RPG's. Probably why I like XI and XIV. It's more natural. THe stories, cutscenes and fun. XIV at first, well, face it fans were the hardest on SE. We expected more. However they are comign through for us, and you know the heads were disappointed as well.

I just hope they leave out Jump actions and keep it natural in speed. OR if Jump is added, it is a run and build to jump thing. for across things, no a bunch of jack rabbits hopping all over the place.

XI was slow at first. I first played it when it hit US PS2 beta. I got the disc in mail after havign to pay for the Hardrive to beta it. Got it set up. Well I didn't like it then. Dabled with John when he played, he really got into XI. Played some more with the first expansion and over haul. By the time the Xbox version hit I was addicted and found WOW and other games weak.

GW i to much of the a typical for me. XIV is more FF, well at least now it is becoming FF like. At first it didn't feel at all like Final Fantasy.

I have hopes for 2.0 I still worry the PS3 coud hold it back on the PC side. But the new engien will change that. Chrystal Tools is scalable on systems for SIngle player action, Lumiious is scalable for MMO needs.

In this day and era, Cloud gaming is a reality. The hardware in front of you doesn't mean jack. With the right data centers set up, you can play top qualit on any device. Heck for some time they demoed Lord of the rings online via Gaikai, so ou played top ultra high setting via a web browser.

SE isn't using the Luminous engine for 2.0, it's using a custom made engine which is made by the same people who made Luminous.

Opengl is a challenge for MMO's to use. Hopefully it won't be to much of a hinder on the Ps3 for how fast characters pop up.

It is using luminous core. They pre-announced that for E3. Hince the tele cast where yoshi mentions the need to shift to shift to the custom luminous engine which is designed for MMO's, including another mmo in development.

THey are not creatign a all new specific engien for FFXIV when Luminous is already being used.
