I think the electric shock that Otis died protected Sphene from was preventing Sphene from body hopping successfully / enacting a barrier to protect the group from the lightning. Or Otis just was living in a state of regret so deep that he was willing to die to make up for his past inability to save Sphene in the past (ie to "die happy" protecting Sphene, regardless of how necessary it was.)
I think the latter makes sense just because I got a general feeling that Otis was an embodiment of living in the past and being unable to really move on.
