FFXIV Dawntrail reviews are out on Metacritic

This is totally honest and fair reviews.

There are also a bunch of people giving a 10, which is honestly doesn't deserve either... But personally, I'd say it's about 5 or 6 out 10.

Visuals and the music are great, although the graphics update on characters kinda changed some things for worse.
Combat is ok but has issues that they didn't really address, the healer strike is somewhat of a thing for genuine reasons.
The story and the characters are where the expansion failed the hardest. Just about the only really well written character to be introduced in the expansion was Bakuul Ja Ja but he's not even in the second half of the expansion...

On the one hand, The story is meant to be the primary part of the game. It gates all optional progression, and the credits roll after finishing it.
But there's more to just an expansion than it's story. If I were to rate Dawntrail, I would give the story a 4/10, but the gameplay (so far as I've seen. Normal mode dungeons and trials) I'd give it 9/10.
That's what makes it so hard to rank an MMO. We haven't seen the raid series, or savage. We haven't seen the rest of the features like the beast tribes, cosmic exploration, the new deep dungeon, Beastmaster, or even the rest of the story in the 7.X patches.

That's why it's so odd to look at review scores for any indication of the expansion's quality. If Shadowbringers had terrible savage raids and extreme trials, I probably wouldn't rate it as highly as I do, but that lower score doesn't mean that it's an issue on the story itself.

Yeah, we really should have a more in-depth way to rate the expansion on those sites.
I still recommend this expansion as I am cautiously optimistic on the future battle content, as we will be doing it in the coming months. But if everything turns out to be EW Rubicante style of difficulty, then yeah... no.

Endwalker and Shadowbringers scored higher? To me those were the worst two expansions this game has ever had. I'm almost finished with Dawntrail and I'm loving it, but then again I took the time to actually read it and enjoy it.

It's ok to enjoy bad writing. You do you, king.

Ok and everyone else also read it. You are not special for being able to read a story written for four year olds.

And I wouldn't have thought a "story for four year olds" would warrant a comprehensive list of other people's criticisms about it, but here we are.

I really think there is a limit to how much can be drawn from critic scores of exclusively the x.0 patch

The best example of this is EW. I personally have massive problems with EW’s story (elpis looking at you) but also acknowledge that to the wider community it’s mostly beloved and considering they had 12 years of lore to tie up its 95% correct

However EW’s patches are unmitigated garbage from a story and an MMO perspective. The raids are poor, the trials are middling, the complete lack of other content is bad and the story is filler

ShB and SB deserve the higher ranking because ShB combined a fantastic story with generally good content and SB combined an okay story with easily the best content we have ever gotten

It’s hard to rank DT right now because while the story is barely a 6-7 in my eyes even accounting for the lack of gear everyone has the battle content we have so far looks to be headed in the right direction and we are set to get more content than any expansion except maybe SB.

I think DT will end up falling like SB, not the best not the worst story but beloved based on its content which won’t get reflected here because EW doesn’t get clowned on for its lack of content in these scores

Been interesting to read through the japanese reviews posted on Metacritic. It certainly demonstrates that the dislike for Wuk Lamat has little to do with the VA and nothing at all to do with transphobia. They all repeat the exact same criticism points about the character (even calling her Mary Sue) and expansion in general, even though they didn't play with the English audio.

I think a 6 is pretty fair. 3/10 story, 9/10 gameplay.

3/10 story is what you give Cars on the PS2. I can't believe such an knee-jerk exaggeration is the an actual opinion around here. I don't hate this game that much that i think a story that is bad by FFXIV standards is freaking 3/10.
