Writing, I'm feeling that the PC (player character) is far too much of a background character in this story than the first half of ARR, some parts of HW and Stormblood. Stormblood at least alternated between the Domans and the Ala Mhigan stories, but in those stories it felt like someone else was doing all the talking. For HW it was largely Alphinaud, for Stormblood it was frequently Lyse/Raubahn and Hein/Gosetsu/Yugiri. But in Shadowbringers and Endwalker, it focused on the Scion characters, and G'raha wasn't center stage all the time.
At one point in DawnTrail I just went "this is just that bloody Titan banquet quest from ARR that everyone hated, again."
IMO, the combined Shadowbringers-Endwalker story was the peak of the game's story telling because the stakes were there. Getting the mcguffins with Wuk Lamat... could have been done with anyone. I don't hate her, but I feel like you could have replaced the WOL with Y'shtola and it would have unfolded exactly the same. I feel like we shouldn't have been "in" the story at all, we should have just walked into town and went "Krile, why are you here?" "Oh that's nice, let's catch up later". We should have been off to explore every area should have been "open", we find the dungeons, we explore, and we run into the important characters when they need help. Like there is only one point that I felt "our help" was needed and that was the 8-man trial.
So far the 4-man duties with Wuk Lamat as a NPC player, she's far more squishier than Thancred in ShadowBringers and Endwalker. Maybe the developers listened to the part about "I could just sit there and do nothing as a healer and the NPC's don't need my help." However it does feel like the game is still not putting the right balance of healing into the content. The healer being reduced to 5% HP, and then having to redo the fight when there isn't enough time to hit another button is different from "the NPC party members barely stay alive". I held back on the first duty to see how squishy Wuk Lamat was. Yes, she will KO if you don't heal her on the first group of mobs, which is more like how it should be.
I appreciate that we can use the NPC's for the content and not have to wait in a queue for an hour. However I feel that the game actually encourages this too much. Like just plain spells out "hey I can fight" and "hey I can heal" despite the fact YOU are the healer. Like I don't need to know this every time my dudes.
