Seriously, "we can't do X because of leftover code from 1.0" is just dumb at this point. You're telling me we're 6 versions in the future and still relying on that excuse?

Granted, I don't think they've used it recently, but the point still stands.

No, the spaghetti code is not from 1.0. There is no code in game from 1.0. This is a misunderstanding on the player, from translated interviews. The issue is code from 2.0, because it was done quickly and they cobbled things together in less than 2 years, which is an insanely short dev cycle for an MMO. Also, most of the things they have said they can't do are related to memory, as in "things loaded into memory". Much of that was because of console limitations. The ps4 has 8 gigs of memory, the ps3 had 256.

Oh? That's my mistake, then. I was thinking the source of the issue was one thing when it was really another. Issue still stands regardless, they need to do better.

Is it possible, though ? I'm really asking. It doesn't seem so easy to me (unless you accept to "pause" a MMORPG for quite a long time).

Its possible, I mean wow is 20 years old and while it does have Jank a game created in 2004 has less ghost inputs and snapshotting issues then a game made in 2013.

Speaking as a former game dev, it's always possible. The equation is more about how difficult it would be.

The actual question is, is it financially worth it for the time investment needed?
As a software project goes on and more on more systems are built upon the base of your project, the more things will severely break if you want to change something near the foundation level. FF14 even had a recent hilarious case of this, where the devs attempted to uncap the amount of buffs the player can receive in every instance, but it horribly backfired and caused hilarious and gamebreaking results back when 6.5 launched.

When the team I was working on had to make some core changes to our mobile game's framework halfway through development, it took us nearly 3 weeks to get back to a stable state. For a game at the massive scope as FF14, for foundational systems to be fixed/reduxed/etc, it would likely require a huge time investment - a time period that main development of content would need to be suspended to focus on the fixes.

People already go crazy over slightly longer than normal expansion delays (SHB -> EW, and again with EW -> DT), do you think an effective year+ long delay on new content is going to go over well with the playerbase? Even better, how are you going to justify it to the Square Enix board of directors and the investors when the game is already insanely successful and practically printing money as is? A delay that long without real tangible benefit (the game may feel better to play, but I can pretty much guarantee the greater casual playerbase isn't going to care that much about netcode issues and will have much bigger problems with content delays. That, and you'd be extremely hard-pressed to prove the monetary gain of theoretical players coming back to FF14 after they had quit purely because of netcode issues will offset the loss of revenue in delayed expansion + sub costs from people unsubbing due to extreme content drought) would be financial suicide.
