The actual mentors doing most of the heavy lifting are the ones actually answering kindly to sprout questions, and the ones queuing up with them for their sprout dungeons or roulettes, which I also try doing. And the too few ones actually mass inviting sprouts. It's important honest work.

The kind of very specific knowledge I have though, or the same way that I know next to nothing when it comes to gold saucer things, well another mentor will be a gold saucer expert and will be able to answer to new players when they have questions on gold saucer stuff. So even if you don't know everything, one, you don't even need to, and two, someone else who has the expertise in it will have the answer anyway. And the ones that have very little academical knowledge can still help sprouts more directly in their dungeons or quests and whatnot. There is no shortage of help one can provide no matter one's own specialization in the game.
True story. I first tried this game sometime during ARR. I got so lost. Couldn't figure out the map system. Couldn't figure out the teleport system. Barely understood why I was going to have level 2 classes to get to what I wanted (Bard). Just outright baffled. I spent a couple hours trying to find someone that could help me figure out where to go for my quest. Yes I was looking for ladybugs but I couldn't even figure out how to get out of town (long ago and far away with really bad load times on an ancient machine didn't help). I finally found someone who said I will take you there he had me rend a chocobo and follow him. God knows where I ended up but level 30 MOBs when I was level 2 wasn't good. I left the game before my trial was finished and didn't give it another try for years. A mentor could have set me on the right path in less than 5 minutes. I had no luck at all.

When I came back sometime in Stormblood I didn't find a mentor until I was something like level 50. At that point I asked someone with a crown a question and he flat answered it and got me sorted.

Mentors or people willing to do the job are necessary. Without some serious googling (which is how I pulled it off the 2nd time)this game can trip people up in some very odd ways and the internal documentation often leads a lot to be desired.

But, all in all, just like with normal people, there are good mentors and bad mentors. Just like there are good newbies (who actually take feedback and learn) and bad newbies (like healers who start throwing a tantrum at the mere mention of doing DPS during downtime).
Guildhest mentors are HILARIOUS! They should have their own, rusted looking, crooked and cracked crown. See them spamming their emotes and showering everyone with an excessive amount of praise "amazing job guys you're the best!" *Dotes upon each party member* while begging for commendations! In a level 10 guildhest that you could beat with auto attacks and go afk to make a snack.

For years I hid the crown, because it wasn't necessary to help.

But a few months ago I started wearing it again, mostly because I was tired of getting looked down on by other mentors despite the fact that I'm a 1.0 veteran slowly grinding my way toward the mentor mount.

I for one is curious, is there any reason for other mentor look down on a mentor that's actually do their job/role?

It's pretty absurd when you think about it. People will say "don't huwt the wittle sprout's feelings by telling them what to do" about a person who is likely a 35 year old man with a career and a family.

Because the mentor system (particularly battle mentor) is a way of identifying someone as a veteran player that, in many cases, has played since ARR/HW/SB. This is not always the case, since sometimes it's just 1 year or since ShB, but usually it does mean that (based on all my conversations with mentors over the years).

So it would be reasonable that they allow for the possibility they are not a sprout but are also potentially still somewhat new (for example, just beat MSQ and lost sprout). There are other ways of identifying this sort of stuff of course, like old event mounts, rare titles that take years of work, rare glamours, etc. But still.

Plenty of 20 year olds play this game as well. This is also not exclusive to sprouts. Anyone can report over their feelings being hurt, it is just that sprouts may not be aware of this yet, so like they teach everything else, people can teach them about this.

20 year olds get hurt feelings from being told what to do? Being employed or tutored must be difficult for them.

Now a days 30+ year olds act allot of the times like braindead Kids to be honest with the Emotion levels of one... just go on twitter or Tiktok and see whats going on looool.
This is not a Valid Argument the past 5 years anymore.

    And its getting worse.

To be perfectly honest - I only did my 2000 roulette runs for the tomes and the mount. Now that I have that I kind of yeeted the thing off two or three years ago.

So I can understand the criticisms since I was one of those mostly silent mentors.

My 30y old with a family feelings were so hurt when I got rebuked for offering "simple advice" to a sprout that I immediately came on the forums to whine about it.
