remember when they said the subscription price would never change? now they think they can say that its not changing because its jsut sales tax, adding about $3 cad to a $20 sub because of currency conversion and hidden conversion fees and now tax on top of it
    cringe. rude. greed. corrupt.

if there is no additional tax required for where you live you will not be charged it. Also SE does not get to keep the extra tax money they must pay the government that requires it (Country/province/city/state whatever). So its hardly greed on that.

Conversion fees are charged by the processor SE doesn't get a dime of that. If you want to argue its greed on the part of the banks that do the conversions fair enough but it is not SE.

Currency conversion is just normal business as not all currencies have equal value $ for $

They used to absorb the state's sales taxes; now they want to increase square enix's stock value at stock market, that's my guess. These state's sales taxes have existed for almost a decade on online stuff.
I advise them to make less babylon's fall, avengers, and forespoken.

Meanwhile namcobandai over there funding Dark souls/Elden ring making some good money.

The price of a subscription is not changing. Currency conversion fees go to the banks and payment processors. Taxes go to the government, not the seller. The game company gets only the base subscription fee that they quote.

You've got a lot of other entities wanting to make money off your transaction with the game company and the game company has no say in the matter.

That's a good description of many government revenue services that taxes go to.

This isn't something to pin on SE. It's something to pin on your local government if they choose to tax digital game downloads.

It was really strange going through Google to find articles about which states tax digital game downloads and which don't.

Some have a narrow definition of what is a digital product and some have very broad definitions.

Some includes game downloads under digital products, some don't.

Some specifically exempt game downloads despite otherwise meeting the local definition of a digital product.

Some tax only digital game downloads (classing them as software) and waive taxes on all other digital products.

Government bureaucrats are very good at complicating things that should be simple for the sake of keeping a job. Businesses have no choice but to comply if they want to retain the ability to do business in those locations.

now something that is puzzling me is ......why SE is adding taxes until now? is not like they can decide whether to pay them or not.... they have to.... and this whole tax digital products seems to be from 2019 or even before, doesn't matter what transaction intermediary companies use or if they're overseas , everything pay taxes in this country

But like...idk if I'll even be able to pay my subscription if I keep getting hit with more fees. I'd love for Square Enix to clarify - on top of some more transparency regarding the payment processor issue. But who knows if that'll happen :')
You can expect to pay about $3-4 more per month for the subscription alone, and then usd value+30-35%=CAD value +13% for anything else like retainers or mogstation. yeah thats really expensive. so a $50 mogstation mount will cost you about $75. everything will be close to 50% more expensive than the usd value on their website.

It's just more greed and money schemes but "we just pass it off to the consumer" and word it in such a way that "we arent technically changing the sub price" idc what people say or think or what games politicians or corporations want to play. if my $13 = $20 sub is now $23 , my sub price went up. period.

Sales tax is literally a consumption tax that is for purchases. It was always passed to the consumer because that is the target of the tax.

I'm not sure how this is a new concept lol.

Literally, nothing changed for me. My state has taxed digital sales for a while now. Everything is always 6% more.

It's very shameful they add taxes but won't even give out a single update for na/eu on any visa card fix minus making a new account. No offense they are losing money with this new payment processor maybe I don't know fix it and people will give money??
