Upcoming Changes to Payments for NA

Thank you for your continued support of FINAL FANTASY XIV.
We have an announcement regarding upcoming changes related to game subscriptions, as well as all purchases made from the Mog Station and the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Store.

Beginning June 25, 2024, all customer transactions on the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Store and Mog Station, including game subscriptions, will be subject to any state or local sales tax, where applicable. Any purchases made following the introduction of these changes will be adjusted to include estimated sales tax based on the address registered on the Square Enix account from which the purchase is made.

Please note that this change will also apply to recurring subscriptions paid by credit card or Crysta to your service account, and any subscription charges processed following the introduction of these changes will also be subject to applicable sales tax.
To avoid incorrect charges, please ensure that the address registered to your Square Enix account is correct. You can confirm and update your registered address by logging into the Square Enix Account Management System (https://secure.square-enix.com/) and accessing the "Account Information" section from the "Account" menu.

Following the implementation of the new payment processor on April 23, 2024 we have been receiving reports from users that Visa Debit card transactions were not functioning properly.

Thanks to the reports from users, we were able to confirm that Visa Debit card transactions in North America are not being processed. We are working closely with our partners to address the issue and will share an update as soon as we have more information. While the issue is being addressed, affected users can utilize other payment options such as Amazon Pay, PayPal to purchase Crysta, or game time codes.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience while we work to address the issue.

... they're now going to add taxes on both purchases from Mogstation, online Store, and subscriptions. Ugh. Have they even given any updates on the Visa Debit issues?

Taxes? Im so confused. Does that mean everything will become more expensive?? Do you know if the taxes are based on the taxes from our own country?

That's the whole point. This is NA-specific. There can be local laws in that state which want tax paid on subscription services, while others may not even have them.

This comes off as completely tone deaf given we've had *zero* updates about the payment issues with Visa card users. How has it been a month with no new information? Absolutely unacceptable.

Man I'm a little concerned about this myself. I'm Canadian so I already have to deal with currency conversion when paying my subscription. Now I may be subject to some tax? Maybe not???? Idk the lodestone post wasn't super clear and I know there's obviously big prioritization for the USA because that's where their offices and stuff are located. But like...idk if I'll even be able to pay my subscription if I keep getting hit with more fees. I'd love for Square Enix to clarify - on top of some more transparency regarding the payment processor issue. But who knows if that'll happen :')

This is such crap. They've operated fine and dandy for what, 11 years now without needing to do tax and now, SUDDENLY, this is a thing? They haven't even fixed the Visa Debit card issue yet, which DEBIT is a major form of payment within the United States, many folks don't use Credit Cards, it is wild they think it is OK to have people jump through hoops to pay.

At this point, I am going to offload my 3 extra retainers (they only bring me junk anyway) and load up on subscription time cards and go that route.

Many states are requiring taxes. It's not SE just deciding to do it. It's law.

I don't know if this has something to do with the new payment processor or if there have been some changes in local tax laws in some states that SE is having to comply with to operate legally there. I really doubt this is something that SE just decided to start doing now. Tax code can change very quickly and very frequently in the US, especially local taxes.

Well laws change. This applies to NA specifically, so obviously a law must have changed in NA.
