Good lordy.. playing through that scene with Wuk Lamat was a roller coaster of a "What.. is going wrong here..?" I legit couldn't figure out what they were going for with her since it kept changing all the time. There was some of cringe, jokes fell completely flat, the... accent? All in all.. her delivery really started to annoy me more and more.
Until the friend I was playing with showed me the Japanese version, and suddenly it just clicked. And I realized they were 2 completely different characters.
And even after listening to JP, DE and FR. All of them seemed to know the character they were playing, with varying levels of conviction, sure. But even the German one actually did a better job on the lines that made me seriously giggle like a child. (-"So is anyone still hungry...?")
It baffles me how the NA actor is just so... far off point.
I wanted to look and see if there was anything on reddit, but it seems any and all criticism is getting deleted there. Even people suggesting these forums exist aren't allowed to point out that there are more people voicing some, as I see it, mostly legit criticism from their own experience.
Now for those of you who like the voice, that's great. Life's always better if you can enjoy more stuff in it. Far be it from me to tell you what to like or not. Tastes differ after all, and I consider that a good thing.
However to see people try and shut down conversation and discussion about legitimate criticism by implying we're transphobic?
You can join the transphobes for all I care, and get out of the discussion if you don't know how to hold one with people who's opinions differ from yours.
Because I legit didn't know the actor was trans until today when my friend told me. And neither does that matter to me, because this is a discussion about an artisan craft; Voice acting. One in which I've worked myself back on Newgrounds. We don't see the person's face, we don't care about the person's body, we care only about the voice Acting they delivered. And the Acting, was just, simply put, bad.
Edit:
I've lived through Before Meteor, ARR, HW, SB, ShB, EW... is it the worst I've heard? No. But most characters at least seemed to know what kind of character they were acting out, this one feels like an injustice. Does that mean they can not improve? No, everyone can get proficient at a skill with practice. However I do not think a main character in a big beloved main entry to the Final Fantasy series is necessarily a place for practice. XIV has come a long way from it's humble roots where they had to re-make so much of the game, to now start dipping into a cheap hiree for a main character.
And all the people that give the most childish response: "Oh I guess we should fire Krile and G'raha's VA's too for their lackluster performance" are arguing in such bad faith, it is hardly even fathomable. I absolutely adore Krile and G'raha both. They might've been a bit off in this last patch, but they've more than proven their worth.
People have something to say because this is a new character. It happens all the time. Who they are in real life has very little to do with it.
