Accessibility Markings to Show Directional & AoE

Essentially a skill like this would, optionally, have a mark to show you the directional or (less important but could be helpful) AoE type.

For example here you'd have (bad mock up):

(Because there are more rear attacks than face I just put the 'rear' as the top of the icon, therefore the sides are the sides for flank and the bottom would be 'face').

The AoE idea is simply right in the center you could have an icon for conal, line, or circle, as a separate option.

For jobs you're familiar with this is not helpful, but if you switch into a job you've not used for a while I feel this would help quickly and correctly pick up a class. Again though, it'd be an option- so if you don't want it then you don't get it lol.

One way to save internal real estate but show positional is to add a special border on the side of the icon that is the positional, like a gold line on the top would mean 'rear' (in the above example) or on both sides to show 'flank'.

Or perhaps rather than on the icon for AoE types there is an option to gently fade player conals akin to enemy attacks yet in a different color (how enemys have circular attacks marked on the battlefield), which could also help build memory easily (at some point you may turn it off).

    Thanks for reading

The positional information is already in the tooltip and if you're playing a new job you should absolutely be reading the tooltips.

Why would I reread the tooltip in the middle of the fight to be like "DANG IT, WHICH DIRECITON WAS THAT AGAIN?" when I could see it nearly instantly on the ability itself? Especially as many players are not clickers (and therefore don't have tooltips pop up during fighting, and to do so would actually cause more stress/annoyance).

You may have a steel-trap for memory but just because I read the tooltip before going out into content doesn't mean I've locked that position in for the rest of eternity. If the icon was notched I could instantly /know/, rather than having to check it after returning to it and having to repeat in my mind it was a rear and then a flank, then have to remember a bunch of other mechanics and have to check it mid fight because I was worried I forgot.

If you're forgetting things you've read that quickly you have bigger problems than ability icons.

to be fair "forgetting things you've read that quickly" basically sums up ADHD in a nutshell, you know a very common condition

In a void it's easy to remember, when you are also trying to recall an entire fight and remain situationally aware to unique variables (player/human element)- I think it's fair to say not everyone is going to well recall it. Including the fact this is all accessibility/ QoL, so I don't see why you are insistent that people should just memorize it.

Counter example, combos shouldn't highlight their sequence. People should just memorize them, if you go out of sequence or forget your order.. that's on you. That's patently silly, imo.

    I'm aware, I have it.

Welcome to a discussion forum. You are free to post whatever you please and others are free to disagree.

This isn't a QoL/accessibility issue, this is a you issue. If you can't remember your positionals immediately after reading them you have no hope of remembering the fight mechanics either so your point is moot.

The feature you are asking for would be a waste of time and resources for the dev team because it would only apply to this guy:

Remembering the order of a long sequence of abilities is not the same thing as remembering "stand behind the boss" moments after reading it.

I'm aware we can disagree, but I can just call your opinion bad too so there's that. Yay, opinion. Most combos are not complicated, the highlight is just helpful so you don't need to remember, except for perhaps dragoon your response is moot as well. Especially since the highlights were invented when there were only very simple combos. They just wanted to help people with information. 1 2 3 is not a challenge notably greater than memorizing specific directionals. Similarly using your bad logic applies to currency spending abilities, it's not hard to know you have 50 points due to a bar showing you that- yet they will help you know they are available anyways via other means too.

Like maybe 10 minutes to edit the ability icons in photoshop, really not a lot of work.
