For me personally, it was opt-in. I chose not to join it for years because of what I'd heard about it but when I joined, it was great and just answering sprout questions.

I want to say it's opt-out for mentors and opt-in for sprouts. As you can decline the invite. If irc when a person 1st gains their mentor status and there's room in the chat they get instantly tossed into it.

I think the first time I had Titan, I got them to 0.1% but I was alone and couldn't tank it as a healer. The other times I took them through to the clear. All of my Ramuh runs have been great too, sometimes even 1-shots, but I either had a co-tank that was a mentor and knew the fight or a party of sprouts that were a lot better at the game than their sprout was suggesting ie. they probably queued together.

You can be a Mentor and not interect/join the NN chat
Nothing stops you from helping players in the open world.
Note: Majority of new players/sprouts ain't even in the NN!

And that's why I stopped to help Sprouts, Twintania NN is so toxic. A Lot of Mentors there talk crap 24/7, same with Sprouts.
Since a few weeks we got now the Bruh Fuxx Shit mentality. There are some super ERP Mentors with some ugly disgusting "Licking" shit, that they write in the Network.
If someone says something outside that crazy bubble ... kick. Cause suddenly the normal Mentors and Sprouts are the problem who causes stress to those deranged Players.
It goes so far that Sprouts max 3 Jobs fast enough to Level 90 to become a Trade Mentor.
They know nothing about their Jobs and best was a few Weeks ago, after a Sprout wrote in NN "Look who is now a Mentor!" ...
"Please do not ask me any questions, I got Mentor Status because I made a lot of Items and Levequests."
I asked that Sprout why he became then a Mentor if he can't answer questions?
Guess what happened?

My alt is based on twin and I spent a long time on it. The nn there is fun and a nice place. I'm not sure where ur getting this from

If the chat is getting that far out of what is acceptable, report it to the GMs and blacklist those participating. If they agree that the chat violates ToS, they'll take action against all those involved and not just the single reported player. They may even remove mentor status from those who are mentors if the chat is extremely far outside of ToS.

But the last thing you want to do is complain about it in NN itself. All that usually accomplishes is getting you kicked by one of those who will shout "censorship, freedom of speech".

No one would touch the mentor system if it didnt have the crown icon.

I've joined on my max level characters for the NN access. First thing I did was turn off the crown on each of them because I don't want that thing hanging over my characters' heads. I just want to help answer questions in NN when I can, and help with first time clears for MSQ (especially trials) if I'm on one of my Marilith 90s.

Thankfully, the NNs on my characters' worlds are fairly decent. It's when I go to other worlds that have NN not already packed with mentors that I run into chat about questionable topics. Don't think I've felt a need to report anyone over NN chat since I transferred an alt off Siren mid-Shadowbringers, though. Now that was a cesspool.

This started happening on Sarg also. Some participants started talking about licking a lot. Over time I watched the chat shift toward more and more furry roleplay. Kickwars started happening frequently around the same time. I noticed some mentors in this group of players started kicking mentors who were kicking obvious trolls. More and more Sarg NN chat became dominated by "licking" and what follows along with that. Kicking trolls became risky if you wanted to stay in chat because another mentor might kick you for trying to stop chat from spiraling into a troll induced argument.

Whatever. They can have creepy chat and troll drama. Since that's the association now, I don't want a crown saying I'm part of the Sarg mentors anymore.

Also, Elicia is back now, and she's one of the people who cleaned it up in the first place back when it was a mess in Stormblood. She's one of TK's circle, so that should tell you something.
